Auto shifting manual?

Ford is developing a manual transmission that would include electronic clutch as opposed to using the actual clutch pedal.

Not sure how i feel about this....basically turns a manual into a glorified chrysler autostick if you ask me. Atleast you can "turn off" some of the ridiculiousness.

I agree with the last sentence in the article. Tho as as an old school drag racer this would have been great, no missed shifts.

There was a guy back in the day who made custom 4 speeds for drag racing. Cant remember his name but ive heard it thrown about on various tv shows...

IIRC he would grind every other tooth off every gear in the trans so it was almost impossible to miss a shift. Something like that.

I guess this thing fords doing is a cool idea in that maybe itll get a few people to atleast try a manual trans, but at the same time its kinda like drive by wire to me....what really is the point besides making it eaiser for the ECM to babysit.

FTC gear in Madison Heights MI use to do this... it was called Pro Ring.

Thats interesting. Doing it the way you said makes more sense, its been a few years since i last heard about the guy that did it.

I didnt know VW drags were a thing. Thats actually pretty cool.

go to the bug nationals in Winston salem north Carolina and you can see tons of air cooled drag racing. its a three day event and is awesome. alcohol powered vw drag cars and tons of classic air cooled vws in the car show area.

i tried to bring my karman ghia for the car show part but it wasn't completed in time, back when i lived in NC. now its gone but i would still go to the bug nationals. it was a blast

At Milan Dragway... it's called Michigan Bug Out. We did that event for many years when I had my VW shop.

I drove a 5 speed stick pickup with a carbureted engine for many years. It was kind of stubborn in cold weather. You had to heel-and-toe to brake and clutch and give it gas. The head mechanic at the shop was the only one who could drive it. Nobody else knew how. I miss manuals: both great mileage and performance.

Power shift sounds a lot better.

Seems like a big circle of people doing some self pleasuring.

You loose the ability to manipulate the clutch, and still have to shift the leaver?

Seems like we should have just put a h pattern on one of them slelecto-shift automatics. Called it a day.

Quite a number of years ago, i was contemplating the opposite. Putting a clutch in place of a torque convertor. Never did look into it seriously tho, just no time or money. And it was before the web made research easy.
