Hello, I've been in the process of swapping a 92/93 explorer 4.0 into my 85 BroncoII for what seems like an eternity. I've got the majority of the work done. Now I'm halted by the wiring because I'm a newb at wiring.

I understand I'll have extra connectors left over, but am unsure of exactly what all is required. I'll strip down the harness later. I was unable to get a dash from newer donor.

I'm a couple weeks from the deadline I set myself. And have plans with the rig May 3,4,5.

It will not be seeing time on public roads, just off road. I am not concerned about the gauges other than temp and oil pressure. Fuel gauge never worked, Speedo is twitchy.

I just want this bugger to run.

I have the harness that goes to the ecu in and hooked up to everything that I can find, but am unsure how it connects to the harness with the distribution box and lights, and big white plug. I lack confidence and want my baby back in the sand and dirt, and out of the garage!

If you had gotten a donor dash it would be pretty much plug and play, especially for an off-road only vehicle, because the biggest difference is in the lighting wires.

Unfortunately for you, you are up against the hardest part of the 4.0 swap, which is the wiring.

Thanks guys, I'm getting closer. Need to get a new fuel filter, New wires for my pump, and a flange to connect the rest of my exhaust to my y-pipe. After that I'll try to wire my starting/charging system, tighten my fan back up, and drop in the radiator. Really hoping I can have it running this weekend. I'd like to have a test week to find the quirks before its big break-in.

All the harness really makes quite an interesting spider web under the hood.

Now I can't even find the wires that go to my camshaft position sensor. What do they stem off of?

After taking off my upper intake and digging around I'm starting to think it simply doesn't have one. The engine has the camshaft position sensor, but absolutely no connectors matching it. The engine and harness came from a 92 explorer. Should a 92 have that sensor?

If I were to wire up the fuel pump as an accessory instead of the stock harness would it function properly? I need this thing running, the factory look is not important. I don't care if I have to have a toggleboard for all my components.

Which starter relay should I use, the 85 2.8 relay or 92 4.0? And what all do I need to hook up for it to operate? When I bought my b2 it had a push button start wired in so the factory stuff is hacked.

In theory, as long as fuel pressure is correct, and the engine harness has power it will regulate ignition, injector timing, and air fuel mix right? So the fuel pump and starter don't necessarily need to be in the same circuit?

well, depending on the build date if its a late 92 you may or may not have a cam sensor.

if its an early stlye, it only has the vrs that goes to the edis module.


in this case, just take the harness intact for the 4.0 and lay it in there and run a switched power jumped to the backside of the eec diode in its power dist box, then you can tie the fuel pump you have into its fuel pump side and that should get you out back having fun and getting stuck.


you may also have to tie that switch power to the radio noise filter side to turn the power on for the edis as well, just depends on how that harness is setup.


i would incorporate the starting relay and wiring for the 4.0 as well.

vrs is variable reluctance sensor...the crank shaft sensor.

I found actually moving the engine to be much harder than the wiring. Wiring was just time consuming. Moving an engine with a wheelbarrow and a chain hoist on a homemade wooden arch is hard.

Finally going to have time to work on the bugger again. My fiancee had her ACL reconstructed and life should return to its slightly less busy state. If anyone has any advice on how to simplify this ordeal it would be greatly appreciated. The thought of scrapping it has crept into my mind and it's just not an option.

The thought of scrapping it has crept into my mind and it's just not an option.
Please don't do that. Not when you are this close. Just to get it running, all you need is power to the ecu,the fuels pump(s), the o2 sensor heater, and the starter.

All of the sensors should have been plug & play with the harness that you bought.

Okay, 11 strait days of labor at the golf course, fiance had her surgery, I had a root canal, and I finally get 2 days off to work on the bugger. I have dreams of 4x4.
