anybody used pinion depth gauges on D35 SLA?

going thru the manual getting ready for my 2000 front diff setup.
looks like I need a precision tube that bridges the bearing saddles then a gage setup that sets a specific
height from the inner pinion bearing. then work with the gap as compared to the +/- mark on the pinion gear.
anybody have the height gauge? I could probably make one on the mill if I had the dimensions.
T80T-4020A for the gage blocks, D80T-4020-F49 for the tube.

The back end of a caliper might be accurate enough if you get a good setup. You could bolt a piece if 1" square tubing across the carrier bearing saddles and drill a hole through it for the tail of the caliper to go through and reach the pinion shaft.

Seems I remember @85_Ranger4x4 getting a full set of D35 tools?

The fixture you need might be the same for both TTB and SLA... at least the thought of it being the same seems plausible to me.

I snagged a mostly intact tool set for a M5OD. I got nuthin for a D35 of either flavor.

All you really need for a D35 is a setup for pinion depth, a dial inicator with magnetic base, torque wrenches and a way to hold the housing still while you're wrenching on it. A case spreader would be nice.

the D35 IFS/SLA is different. you don't measure from the center of the bearing to the pinion.
instead you measure form the bottom of the bearing saddle to a gage block that's installed in place of the pinion.
that is supposed to be a specified distance, then you look at the pinion gear where a + or - value is stamped then calculate the shim required.
the end of the pinion isn't flat, you cannot get a repeatable reading on it.
plus, the bearing saddles are not machined flat, can't indicate off them either.

EDIT: added the pic. you can see -2 etched on the pinion. you can also see the only machined area around the bearing is the bore, that's why
you lay a gage tool across the bearing surfaces and measure from the bottom/hidden side of it to a gage block that replaces the pinion.

pulled the inner pinion bearing off, slapped a T square across the the bearing and laid a 6" ruler across the saddles.
it's in the vicinity of 2-7/16" . that's about .050" short of what I think it should be, 2.5057" according to Ebay descriptions of the disk & adapter.
I think a 1-2-3 block with a 3/8" tool blank will allow me to walk up to the shim size.
of course I'll need something to square the block and put some tension on the bearing.

got some more info, and a new to me depth gauge disk. part # T90T-4020-B mfg by OTC

the L shaped piece is the same for 8.8, 7.5, and 35/194 front axles. it is 1.7"
the disk is different for each axle, 8.8 = 1.884", 7.5 = 0.894" and the front d35/104 = 0.6672"

I found all the specs in my 2005 manual except for the d35 disk. just received it today, thanks Ebay
I'll be using it in a few days/weeks to set up a front diff.
for those who want to make a tool, the combined height is 2.367"

I’ve had good luck using a setup bearing in the pinion and just doing musical shins until I get it where I want it.

looks like a plain 'ol thick spacer of sorts. I plan on fabricating the L tool and a setup bearing..
