I have certainly purchased a lot less from Rock Auto in the last year or two because of this exact issue. I hope someone from there is reading this thread - very irritating.
Another issue I have had is when ordering several of an item (I'll use a '94 Explorer fuel filter as an example) I'll add one or two to my cart, check shipping, add a few more, shipping doubles, add a few more, shipping doubles again. One order that I created but did not place included two F250 rear brake rotors (shipping was around $8 for both of those) and five fuel filters (shipping on those was almost $20!!!)
Their shipping calculation algorithm just does not make sense sometimes. If you can ship me two 40 pound brake rotors in two separate boxes for $8, it sure as hell does not cost $20 to ship a box the size of one rotor that weighs maybe 3 pounds. It feels like they're making up for low prices on items by gouging on the shipping.
I will say that I later bought those rotors separately for $17 each plus the cheap shipping... they are over $100 each at any of the parts stores... so in the end it's not such a big deal, even if their shipping isn't perfect, I still save a ton of money.
