I’m considering insulating and then lining my bed with wood so I can camp in it without losing the bed for utility. I have some very high R-value thin ceramic insulation left from another project that will be perfect. I am trying to decide what to put on top... camper shell, soft top, or something custom. I don’t want it to look DIY and I’m open to taking the bed off if I need to (I kind of want to ?). Has anyone done a custom build on the bed? Anyone know how heavy it is? ‘03 4.0 6 ft bed supercab.

If you are looking at a bed cap, I would go with fiberglass and one that has a reinforced roof so you can install a roof rack. Aluminum caps are really loud when it rains and fabric caps are like having a toneau cover or a convertible top. Easy to slash and break into.

As far as insulating the bed, I'm not sure what would be the best approach. Maybe that ceramic stuff you have would be good. For the cap sides and rood, I'm thinking of using drop ceiling tiles made from fiberglass insulation and spray adhesive to hold them in place.

I almost bought an aluminum one and am glad I didn’t now. I need to keep my budget down... been watching for a cheap fiberglass one to hit the market. I thought I found one until I showed up and the roof was basically missing ?
