Hi guys

Can someone suggest an aftermarket harmonic balancer or how to measure what I will need?

Cheers Kev

Probably but we'll need to know what engine you're talking about.

I believe early 2.8s had one. Does anyone have a spare one for sale as in photo?

Sorry guys, I posted in 2.8 section. It's a 2.8efi cologne but it would fit all 2.8 cologne engines. I believe the crank is from a 4 litre as it's been stroked to 3.5 liters. The picture above is from early 2.8 cologne blocks possibly bronco or mercury capri.

Regards

Kev

Mixing rotating parts changes things, once you get a balancer I'd recommend sending the crank, rods, pistons, balancer, and flywheel out and having the assembly balanced. I could prove to be cheap insurance. Dorman makes a bunch of replacement pieces like balancers but I can't speak for the quality of their more recent stuff.

Hi Walt,

I appreciate the advice. My engine is balanced and blue printed. All of the 2.8s have dampers but are cast iron. I'm specifically trying to find the damper which is in the photo found on 1970 era USA 2.8 engines as it's a true elastomeric ring vibration damper. Its no good for the truck 2.8s without modification but good for me. Alternatively I can take my damper to a mod shop to have it weighed and measured to replicate for an aftermarket version.

It needs to be rebalanced if you replace anything, you realize.

Yes sir, I've spent alot on the rebuild so far and nothing is standard. Its being put together by an engineer. Hence asking about the part I need.

Its probably better to be self deprecating than self defecating.

I've replaced stock crank pulleys with aftermarkets and certainly didn't tear down the engine and have the rotating assembly balanced, no Ill effects. Can you elaborate on your position? Is this something cologne specific or something?

If the engine was previously balanced like his the balancer, flywheel, crank, etc, most likely have been either ground or weight has been added so that a stock part would throw it out of balance. If everything is factory and you replace the balancer- for example- it's still going to be fine.

These engine are internally balanced. What ever you ad front or rear you can have balanced individually to 0, then just bolt it on. I had my rotating assembly balanced to 0 then my clutch/flywheel balanced to 0 and stock crank pulley. Correct me if I am wrong?

Hi guys,

My engine has been externally balanced. I've since changed pistons so will have to get engine balanced again. Hmm

Oh well it is what it is.
