Ok your question is a little confusing to me because to me it reads you want to use parts of a 2.3 wire harness on a 3.0. But you also said that your concern is using a 97 on a 96. If you are tearing apart one harness to fix another but one for a different engine there will already be major differences.

This is where I am just not understanding where your concern is. You already know that it's not a direct replacement so I'm confused.

To my knowledge the 96 and 97 3.0 motors were the same and the body/interior is the same so should be a direct swap.

98 huge difference 94 is a big difference also because of using the ecc iv computer, distributor system, and still the OBD 1 setup. 95 they changed over to DIS system on the 3.0 requiring the new engine management system.
