Instead of remolding the AC box on the firewall, what would it take to remove it completely but still have a working heater? Anyone done this?

Just get a box from a non-AC truck. They are much smaller. :icon_thumby:

Sounds good thanks! I'll see if I can find one though. Do you still have to mold the corner with the non-AC box though? ... trying to eliminate complexities if possible before I start the swap in a few months.

You will be the first to know...

It varies swap to swap, with a 3" BL and tall valve covers I had to do a little heating and reshaping.

Not sure what your firewall looks like, here is what I had to do with the 4.6 swap if your doing a 5.0 it shouldn't be quite as radical.

I was told that the none a/c equiped trucks syill had the same unit, it was just empty.
Hope this helps you.
BTW my unit works great, still plenty of heat.

That was from somewhere in the 3 generation's reign and newer (I think 94 or 95 they changed the heater box)

83-92 would for sure be the same setup, and they did have two boxes available. I think I paid $13 for my box with the resistor and blower motor still in it... kinda hard to do much custom fabrication for that.

I wish I would have done it years ago, my 302 is much easier to work on with it than my 2.8 was with the other one just because it isn't covering up half the engine. I tried to remold the original one, there wasn't much left by the time I got done hacking on it and I still had this huge box I had no use for covering most of my engine.

Correct, the box for '95+ is the same with and without A/C. And the '95+ trucks require no mods to the heater box to fit the engine. Some trimming may be necessary if EFI is used, depending on throttle body placement, EGR spacer, etc.

Pre '95 and '95+ blower boxes do not interchange, as the firewall is significantly different.
