ABS Not Working.. Mystery 4x4 Component

About a year ago I borrowed a reasonable OBDII reader from a coworker. I was able to read my 99 ranger's ABS trouble code.... didn't write it down, but I read up on the description back then. It was some component, I assume electrical that was only used in 4x4 rangers and, if memory serves me, was mounted on the frame. I have been unable to find any reference because ABS sensor only pulls up wheel sensors. Anyone aware of this part? Was it all a dream?

There is an abs module that actually controls braking fluid to the wheel cylinders when abs kicks in. I would not expect that to be 4x4 specific. But I'm not an expert on the system.

I think it might have something to do with the wheels possibly sliding when 4x4 is engaged in normal operation.

Wheel speed sensor perhaps?

Do you get a pulse in the pedal at low speeds or when turning?

The ABS light has been on since I have had the truck ( 3 years). In this condition it doesn't attempt to use ABS... just normal brakes with no noise or pulse

If it's a wheel speed sensor fault you should be able to drive it and monitor the individual sensors, at least a Ford IDS can.
I hate ABS and both my 04 and 11 Rangers had it. I didn't disable the ABS because I have a NH inspection license and ABS is an inspection item, if I got in an accident with it disabled I'd have been crucified. The 93 I have now was built with ABS but most of it had been removed before I got the truck so I removed the rest, thinking since I no longer do inspections it wouldn't be a problem.

I Just posted a solved about spongy brakes in the fullsized trucks area moments ago, it's the part about the HCU that is the "Mystery Component"...

Thanks for that update. I don't think this applies to my Ranger, being a 99. I also replaced all of my brake lines except for the rear axle and didn't see any kind of hydraulic gizmo along the frame. Just the master cylinder, ABS module and brake lines to the calipers and wheel cylinders.
