Hoping somebody can help me. I found a 99 5r55e out of explorer would be in easy swap in to a 2002 ranger 4x4? Ford has to many different small changes.

Thank you.

I did the same thing. It was supposed to be a drop-in and it was, except the 2002 has an additional sensor and there will be no place to plug it in. I was later told that it has to do with an engineering change to the transmission that is supposed to smooth out the 2-3 shift. Not having the sensor causes me no problem except that the computer detects it and causes the o/d off light to flash. I find that the 2-3 shift is just fine as are all of the others. I can easily tell whether o/d is on or off so I just taped over the light! I have found no easy fix or workaround.

Need to figure out what to do, the transmission slips a lot hard to tell what gears work correctly.

2001 to 2011 5R55E will work in a 2002 Ranger 4.0l, these years have the needed ISS sensor

And must be from 4x4, can't convert 2WD without total rebuild

3.0l and 2.3l Rangers used the 5R44E, just to be clear, so not the same thing

If you are willing to put up with the flashing od off lite as I described, I would say go for it if you can't find a newer one. I am very happy with my choice.

The ISS sensor is used for the adaptive shift control system. The computer learns the best shift parameters based on the conditions and driving style. They are not rare transmissions so I can't see any logical reason not to use the right one.

Explorer transmission work as well I would assume. I found a 2003 explorer transmission from a 4.0l 4x4 that seems like it would be a perfect choice.

Yes, 5R55S or W would work, I think it has an extra sensor on the outside case toward the front, and it doesn't have a dipstick or tube

Some have a bolt that you pulled out, like a manual trans, to check level and refill
Others have a special drain plug that also acted as a level tester and fill with correct hose fitting

Never had one so can't say for sure
May want to check out posts at Explorer forums about it

Thank you for all the info. I can't pass up the deal. $175 for the transmission and TC, less than 100k miles.... Just don't like the idea of no dip stick.
