99 3.0L Ranger Temp Gauage sending unit.....

Hello. Ok, so this is getting weird. I was going to just pull out the sender and repalce it. It takes like 35 seconds with an extention ratchet to swap them....

However, I am having new symptomms since I let it sit. I have not repalced it yet checking if anyone has seen this before......

Now it starts at "Half Way" when first starting and when it warms up it goes to hot and stays there.....like it is starting in warm instead of cold like the dial is off or something but it moves and is not stuck on Hot all the time anymore.

Any eye-deas before I go swap this sender....I was going to get my tester will grab it later check the OHM someone said switches have no OHM...but will check.

Reads like its the wrong sender

When cold it 35 ohms, 1/2 on gauge
When warm 5 ohms, hot on gauge

So test the ohms

250 when cold
35 when warm
is what you want

Ohms are not exact, thats not how it works, ohms are like nuclear bombs, hand grenades and horse shoes, close counts, lol

I read that to mean he hasn't put the new sender in yet. If so, install the new sender and see what you get.

Hello. Ok, I went and got the sender changed. I installed new sender I get same Issue. Needle starts half way and goes to Hot when it get warm....

So, as of now I am lost. I assumed I had a one wire model as I only had one red/white wire available so I wired part number WPT-476 as Ford suggested and installed the new sender.

Is it possible I have a 2 wire model and the other wire is just missing? I see the Green ground on the Pic on a single wire sender but ,one has no other wire supposed to be grounded in itself I thought.

I now am thinking to put in a 2 wire model and try adding the ground now......

I tried to check the OHM but got nothing...I set to OHM 200.....

Set OHM meter to 1K or 2K
Put OHM meter probes on wire terminal and bare threads of sender
Should see between 200-300 depending on outside temp

If its under 100 then its the wrong sender

And re-test the red/white wire
Key on
unhooked wire should show cold on gauge
Grounded wire should show hot on gauge

Ok, I tried the OHM reader. It was difficult to hold the leads but I took off the cv boot and read from the spiral part of the senor and the terminal tip on the sensor. I was not sure what was meant by wire terminal.....I set to 20k it read 47 starting going down.....I tyried to set to 200 again and it read 470 and was going down below 300 when I checked it few min later.....very hard to hold the leads for me but dont really use my testeer for more the continuity myself.

Not sure I did it right but those were my readings........could it be a missing ground anyway?

Ok, here I am unsure as I have no grounded wire with this one wire system only a red/white wire.......is soemthing missing? DO one wire switch systems have a ground somewere else?

Yes, the ground is the threads of the unit, that is why Ron D had you touch the threads with your meter. Did you put any tape or sealer on the threads when you installed it? Sometimes you can over do the sealer on the threads and it interferes with the ground. It grounds from the threads to the engine and uses the engine metal as a ground.

Oh, the red stuff....I did not put anything on the threads like sealer or tape as I figured this part came ready to install when I seen the red stuff.
