So I’ve searched around but couldn’t really find what I was looking for. I have a 93 ranger splash 4x4 3.0. I have everything to swap over to a 4.0 but was just recently offered a 98 ranger for the 4.0 stuff.

I know the 98 has coil packs etc but I didn’t know exactly what would be needed to just swap it right in.

would I need to swap the entire dash/harness/engine computer plus ignition or could I just simply remove the coil packs and convert is back to distributor? Either way I would have the entire parts truck from my understanding.

I had plans of swapping the 4.0 in at some point as I have the entire engine bay harness/trans/tcase/motor out of a 93 ranger.

But if it’s fairly simple to just swap that new of a 3.0 in I would gladly do that instead of swapping everything out for the 4.0 as the truck probably hasn’t seen the road since 2007-2008. Would love to get it going again and finish putting the 4.56 gears in the front and 35’s.

Use the heads, block from the 98, and use all the wiring, injectors, etc from your 93 including the distributor and the lower intake manifold from your 93. I believe the 98 had some differences. I would also use the oil pan from the 93. Get that 98 stripped down and all will be a direct fit into yours using all 93 parts. Also change the passenger side valve cover, as the connection for the air / oil breather hose is in a different location.

Are the flywheels the same as well? I haven’t went to look at the donor truck until this coming weekend but if it is an automatic would the flywheel from my 93 be the same?

sounds like it’s a pretty straight forward swap, I was just worried I wouldn’t be able to put it back to distributor and have to use all the wiring. I assume you would just remove the cam phaser (or whatever it is exactly) and drop the distributor down in?

The fly wheel is the same on all 3.0 engines with a 5spd..I would also use those from your 93 for the 98. Many people over the years have done this swap. Remove the cam sensor assembly and drop in the distributor. Since the pcm times the engine starting in 95, 94 was the last year of the distributor on the 3.0..i would change out the harmonic balancer to assure proper timing.
