You certainly -can- start with that. Lots of us go different routes for various reasons. One is the simplicity of using the Explorer donor - because of the shorter front accessory setup, it fits very well into the Ranger without having to move as many things around (none, if you're in a '98+). It's also one of the best factory tunes for a 5.0.

But there's nothing wrong with an F150 donor. As long as you go into it expecting to work through a few more puzzles, it works just fine.

thanks i'm toying around with swap i think i just blew my 4.0. if i under stand what i read in the tec lib can i use my same transfer case?
that why i thought an F150 would be a better choice. i did not want all wheel drive like the Explorer have.

You have several transfer case options. I wouldn't use the AWD case out of the Explorer or the stock Ranger case though. Pick your preference out of one of the full size options that came stock behind the transmission you want to use.

My credo
If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
Do some research before you buy stuff. In NH, anything 96 and newer needs OBD II emissions inspection. If you use everything out of an Explorer the same year and every bit of the emissions equipment, it still won't pass because the VIN on the registration won't match the VIN in the PCM. It doesn't matter that it would meet the same emissions standards because politicians are looking at the world by peeking out through their belly buttons because their heads are up their backsides.

Always bite off more than you can chew!! :)
Hey Spanky50, if you decide to not go V8 and stick with a 4.0 I,ve got a great running one (complete) I removed from a 95. 94K and well maintained, plus other parts!
