Howdy!

I am looking at an 97 Ranger, 4 cylinder, Manual to buy but the previous owner lost the keys. What options do I have to get new keys for it? Locksmith said he could make a new key from the door and that possibly would work for the ignition as well, but wants to charge $375. Owner wants to sell for a pretty good price IMO.

What do you think? Worth it?

Thanks y'all!

Jeff

A 1997 doesn't have any fancy keys, they aren't chipped. It should cost like $50 bucks to have new keys made. :icon_confused:

Find a new locksmith cause that one is smoking crack... you can buy all new locks and an ignition with keys for like $75 for God sakes.

I didn't ask for your life story, just answer the question!
I usually just hammer this style screwdriver into the ign. switch:

65084

Then turn it with a large adjustable wrench. Then you can remove the switch like normal and replace it.

Ford Dealer can make you a new key if you bring in the VIN, proof of ownership, and drivers license

If you buy it then the title will be proof you need
See about getting two keys but not if second key is too expensive, ask

The VIN serial number will have the "key code", that's how Ford can duplicate the key
But it also assumes no one has changed the locks, lol

The same can be done by any automotive lock smith.

Wow, thanks everyone! Is it your understanding that the door and ignition is the same key?

I spoke to a Ford dealer and they said they can only get get keys from the last 10 years models.
Sounds like they just don’t want to do it.

Consider yourself luck they didn’t ask you to bring the entire steering column to them, and then still not make you a key.....

Usually if you take your door lock cylinder out and take it to a locksmith they can duplicate a key that matches the pins in the lock
And it "should" work in the ignition as well, but I think in some vehicles the door locks were only 5 pin and the ignition lock was 6 pin
So key that worked in ignition would work in the door but key that worked in the door may not work in ignition
