Looking for a 96-01 explorer in the northern virginia area. Must be good running + driving and also have four wheel drive. Looking for one decent priced as cheap as I can find so I can swap it into my 88 ranger. Thank you.

In most cases, you either get them "running" OR "cheap". Hardly ever do the two combine. I spent the better part of 2 years looking for that combo. Finally settles on a non running 2000 eddie bauer AWD 5.0 with NO rear end. $250. I'm currently tearing things down on the '01 Ranger to get prepped for the swap. Than I have to get the 5.0 running before the swap.

Yeah, I knew the risk of putting those two together. Lol.
Just figured I would throw them together to see what I could get.

Also a heads up, no 2nd gen V8 Explorer came with 4WD. Most are AWD, some are 2WD. They can be converted from AWD to 2WD. Most people that have done this conversion also do lots of other things to make it more off-road capable so if you find one that has been converted it probably won't be cheap.
