so im building up a v8 ranger and im basically building from frame up, its an 87..

ive read that you can upgrade to an oem dual piston caliper from a 95-97 ranger.. for all the parts and time, is it worth it? just currious.. how much better braking will it give and will gen 1 brake hoses fit the new calipers?

If you are already rebuilding from the frame up, I would say yes, it is well worth it, especially since you are putting a heavier engine and transmission in it.

You will need the knuckles, callipers, rotors, and all associated hardware from the donor truck, and I would get new flexible lines, but if they are in like new condition on the donor, grab them as well.

I have heard the first gen lines are too short. Since one of mine is new I look forward to seeing just how short they are when I swap mine.

I have heard the turn stops are different between the two setups too, no one knew how big of a deal they are when it came up in the axle forum awhile ago. I can't get pics right now but the later axles have bolts that stick out that limit the knuckle travel.

theres a little difference in the bump stops, the gen 1s have a "bolt" the newer ones have a casted triangle in them.. so i did take the plunge and got the 95-97 beams and knuckles, will take pics for a potential tech libary item on whats works..

I'm not going to blankly state that the 2-piston brakes offer better stopping.

I will say absolutely that the swap from the single piston brakes is well worth doing because it eliminates several common "wear points and the ones it substitutes
are easily repairable.

Braking performance is not always about shorter stopping distances.
In this case you get some of that, but what you really gain is more consistant pedal feel and a better selection of aftermarket performance pads.

I'm currently running Bendix Ceramics, but haven't decided I like them quite yet
but I'll point out that EBC, Performance Friction and Hawk brakes all offer a spectrum of
high performance brake pads.

so far i likeing how it looks, no more slide pins that you had to pop in that if stuck caused uneven pad wear.. plus slightly beefier rotors help with heat disapation i would think.. im digging the whole gen 3 front end upgrade with the traction bar.. just need to find brake lines because the gen 1 calipers have the hose on the side towards the shock, the 95-97 calipers have the hose on the back squeezed between it and the rim..

Agree with allend on this, much better design and pad selection, braking performance is better as well.

It would be great, Bro!!! I bought my 99 Supercab new back in July 99. I lifted it in 2000. I put on 33x12.5 AT BF Goodrich tires and AR 8x15 wheels and added new rotors off an Ford Exploder. Perfect fit and the stopping was really great!!! You can do this as well. It was a direct bolt on. Give this a try!!

Good luck with the project!!

I have heard the brake lines are different but didn't know how.

I am kinda mixed on switching brakes, I love the ones on my D28. :dntknw:

My credo
Built not bought
I did the swap 2 yrs ago . It was a world of difference . Plus no more pins popping out going down the road . King pin style brakes suck period do to wear points that can't be corrected ( knuckle )

I know about the knuckle wear, never heard about pins falling out.

In 16 years I have no problems with mine.
