I know the 5.0 rad casts about the same shadow for ever dimension but thickness.

Anyone tried to cool a 5.0 with the later single row 4.0 Radiator?

Kind of hit a philosophical vibe and got to wondering if being able to run a real OEM clutch fan with a single row would do more good than a low profile flexfan with a two row...

Right now the clutch just barely drags on the radiator. With half the radiator I would have roughly an inch of clearance.

Tucking into the support is about nill with a first gen and A/C.

I see this question was never answered.....I'm about to try a one row with Explorer fan/clutch soon. The shroud will be tricky, but for now I may see how it acts with just a top shroud like old base model trucks had.

So far so good with a single core 4.0 rad, 195* thermostat, factory Explorer metal fan/clutch, and a "non AC" shroud from a first gen 2.3 Ranger. It runs right around 197 and climbs to 205ish if I am hard on it, but drops back to 197 in a minute or less.

But.....Its been in the low 60's/high 50's here and I haven't finished the A/C lines to add that extra heat yet either.

FYIW temp wise, in my fx4 5.0 swap I am using all the oem Explorer radiator, shroud, clutch fan, and ac condenser, with a Motorcraft stock 192degree thermostat. And (according to Torque Pro OBD readings) the truck hovers around 185-188 normal driving and cruising under 70mph. It will climb on real hot days in traffic or beating on it, but I've never seen it go above 195.

The 4.0 radiators are sizable, and I know people sometimes use them with the v8 swaps. I wouldn't have an issue using it if I needed to, I think it would handle a stock 5.0 fine, but it would be ideal to have some other temp gauge readings to watch other than the stock cluster needle so you can see what the numbers really are and learn when the t-stat is actually opening.

Yep Cluster TempGauge is very slow to respond; by the time gauge rises, engin is already way over temp.
Does your TorqueProOBD have the ability to display live data?
If so can use that to monitor various items while driving: Engin Temp, Trans Temp, Intak Temp,...
Personally use OBD2~BlueTooth~AndroidPhon module OBDLink#MX+ with the OBDLink app displaying several variables\gauges.
Click here for more info on OBD2 Scanners.

AllAluminum Radiators for the 4.0l~SOHC are available in 1\2\3\4 Core versions,
with various core thickness roughly 25mm ~ 70mm, depending on maker\vendor;
click here for more info on these Radiators;
click here for dimensioned drawing of these Radiators.

The 98+ trucks have a lot more room for a radiator (not to mention the 98+ 4.0 rad is taller and wider than the older trucks)

The reason I am running a single core is because the fan wont clear anything thicker. I use torque pro to monitor temps and a few other things whenever I know I'm going to beat on the truck for a bit.

Well. I have put close to 3000 miles on the swap. Just made an 800 mile round trip to Bristol and back from OH. Through the hills of WV running 75-80mph with the A/C on. Never got over 207*. I'm still on the hunt for a smaller clutch fan that should allow me to run a full shroud and I believe that will keep temps under 200 even in summer heat.

That's about what mine runs with the efans and flex fan with a/c.

I would really like to swap the flex fan for a clutch fan and maybe get some more mpg's.

Any luck on the smaller clutch? 30x1.5 threads...

Depending on what depth you have to work with....the 2001ish S10 with the 2.2 engine appears to have a 15" fan and clutch that is CCR and M30x1.5, but its over all 5/8" or so taller. The clutch is available new, but the blade has to be sourced used from what I can tell. I haven't actually got my hands on the combo to actually try and test fit anything yet.

Clutch is 5/8" taller?

The Explorer clutch just barely rubs on the radiator right now. I need shorter.

How about a mid 00's 2.3 Ranger?

Per Rock auto the height is 55.6mm vs 68.1mm for the Explorer clutch.

Like Hayden 2675 vs Hayden 2841

I have pictures somewhere of an 07 2.3 Ranger fan. The "clutch" itself may only be 55.6mm, but the nut on the back was substantially taller than the explorer, and it was still 18" so it does me no good.

So small update....don't order a Hayden 2841 if you expect it to be 68.1mm. I have ordered two from different places. Both appear to just be the same 80mm-ish tall generic replacements now. All of the parts store images show one identical to the original, but that's not what you get anymore now that the box says made in China.
