My wife got into a front end collision yesterday with her 1995 Explorer.... she said the engine was still running and she turned it off. When she seen there was no fluids or anything, she went to move it and it wouldn't start again.

I had the tow truck driver bring it home, fuel pump is working, I disabled my alarm/remote start system and still won't start. I don't have a code reader but CEL is illuminated while engine cranks.

I'm tempted to go get a crank position sensor, but before I do, does anyone else with probably more experience on these have any ideas?

Thanks,

Justin

Also, All fuses and relays appear to be fine in the fuse block and panel.

Fuel pump coming on means inertia switch hasn't been tripped, which is odd when there is a sudden stop, i.e. collision

I would get a spray can of starting fluid(ether) first, pull off power brake or PCV hose from intake spray some in, put hose back on and crank.

If it fires and then dies you have spark, but no fuel
If it doesn't fire then there is no spark.

CKP(crank position) sensor tells computer engine is turning so start spark and fuel.
If you have spark then CKP sensor is fine.

If engine stayed running after collision then CKP sensor should be fine now, but it is the "no start sensor"

While you typed that I was outside messing with it..... I put my fuel rail pressure gauge on to see if pump was running while cranking and cycled key a bunch of times.

No fuel pressure. Tank show's fuel, but just to entertain it I will go fill up a gas can and put more in.

Any other ideas?

I take the last post back. Just to make sure my gauge adapter wasn't faulty I pulled it off and stuck a needle tip in there and touched neg off then back on with key on.... hand took a fuel bath.

Sprayed intake with starting fluid, nothing.

So officially it has no spark.

I'm going to go with maybe she doesn't really know if it was still running or not and go try my luck with a $30 CKP sensor

Yes, no spark could be CKP sensor.

You could check coil for 12volts with key on, power comes from EEC relay in power box, this relay also powers computer and fuel injectors, if it was bad you wouldn't have CEL come on when key was on.

Swapped ckp, still no start.

What wires on the coil pack plug to test for power?

Does your '95 have a cam position sensor(CPS)?

In old distributor hole

A problem with CPS shouldn't stop spark

OH WAIT

The 1995 should still have the EDIS module, EDIS-6 for a 4.0l

Located----------------on the rad support, front end collision.......could be damaged or just unplugged

CKP sensor connects directly to EDIS module, and the wiring for the EDIS module runs across the front of the engine bay.
EDIS module is almost autonomous, it reports to computer but can do basic spark on it's own.

Google: Picture of EDIS6 module

CEL is because there is no signal from EDIS to computer

I'm working on pulling everything off the front, but I can't find it yet, and no definitive answers on google. Will keep digging into it.

Should be passenger side rad support about 1/2 way down, has a large heat sink(fins)

I'm looking all up through there and I don't see it anywhere...... unless I'm blind.

I found it. Its actually right behind the driver side light, engine side of the support, mounted in the corner. Had to remove battery to gain access.

the support was slightly bowed in and before unmounting it the case was splitting open at the seams.

Going to head to the j-yard to pull some head lights, grill, valance/bucket thingy and I'll see if I can grab a few EDIS modules, as new they are $$$$... I'm bound to get one good used one.

Thanks for all the help, I'll report back when I get this thing running.
