No sign of any fluid leaks, but I regularly have to add ATF to the trans. When I got it, It had sat for 2 years. The level was fine, but one day it wouldn't move in reverse. I ended up adding 2 quarts and all was good. 1000 miles later I added another quart. This morning I checked it after driving it and I added a pint. NO sign of leakage. Where could it go?

Does the a4ld have a modulator valve? I've heard of the diaphragm rupturing and engine vacuum sucking up atf on older trans.

If it's burning excessive oil you might check the tailpipe too, wipe inside it and see if it leaves smoot on your finger

I originally had E4OD as the trans type. It wasn't you! I have a modulator on order, we'll see how it works out.

Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.
Good chance that it may be the modulator. A while back my '84 with the C3 trans also needed ATF added regularly, but with no visible leaks. Had me stumped, until I finally noticed that occasionally it would put out a good-sized cloud of white smoke out the exhaust. Pulled the vac hose off the modulator, and ATF dripped out. A new modulator stopped the ATF leak and the white clouds. Hope the new modulator takes care of yours, too.

If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
If it's a 4x4 check the transfer case fluid, I've seen the rear trans seal leak fluid into the transfer case. Another thing to check is to see if there's atf in the coolant. If it is a leaky modulator make sure you blow out the steel line and replace any rubber hoses that were exposed to the fluid and any rubber plugs on the vacuum tree if the line connects to one.
