I pulled the left axle to replace brakes and the seal....of course I broke the differential pin locking bolt and finally got that out, and replaced it. Reassembled and when I rotated it, it seemed there was a bit of resistance at one or another point.....not the brakes...didn't have the drums on yet..... blew the case out clean with air, and brakekeen. I began to think maybe I had a shred of a rag in there because it seemed soft when it met resistance... but I couldn't find anything, it seemed mild and if it is a piece of rag, It will grind up....

Finished the brakes, muffler and some frame repairs, gas tank back in, go to move it and it binds up...pretty hard. Forward 4-6 feet and bump...no hard noise, just like I had a chain on the back to a tree. Reverse same thing....back a few feet and lockup. I gave it some throttle, but it's a real solid bind

Raised left wheel off the ground, locks up. Spin by hand 1.7 rotations of the wheel and bump...locked.
Raised both wheels, typical counter rotation of the axles....all good there.....20 rotations...nothing

With the bed still off I can get to it easy enough, pull the cover and have a better look.

When I had the axle out, nothing moved, nothing fell out...whatever that mid resistance was when I had it open is sure enough causing a real hard binding now.

Any ideas? I'm going to pull it apart...take a look. Gotta be something about the spider gears.....maybe I did move something,...but it went back together ok...

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
If it happens at about 1.7 revolutions of a wheel with one wheel on the ground but let's you rotate continually with both wheels in the air, then it seems to be something with the pinion. Make sure there isn't a piece of something wedged in between gear teeth on the pinion or ring gear.

Bingo. All good. I had wedged the ring and pinion to keep it from rotating with a wooden wedge. A splinter broke off ...wedged...didn't notice it, didn't come out when I rinsed and blew the case before shutting it up.
