I currently have a 93 ranger 4cyl 2wd, i use it for work every day for pool service, this past two weeks the truck has been blowing white smoke on several occasions, and when it does it the truck becomes sluggish and i can hear a rattle coming from the engine. It shoots out black stuff out the tail pipe when i start her up in the morning. Also it eats up a lot of oil like 2 quarts a week. I would like to know if its possible to fix this or if its better for me to put another engine in... any advice is apreciated

Have you been losing any coolant? White smoke is a sign of water getting in the cylinders. Blue smoke is a sign of oil being burnt. It could be that your burning the oil that is disappearing. That would mean rings or valve seals.

Probably more cost effective to put in a low mile used engine. Especially with the rattle you hear.

I was looking in the market in my area for a 2.3 but theyre all 1995s, i know theyre some differences from 93s and 95s, will they work for my 93?

I can't help you with that. I'm more familiar with the 4.0l. Hopefully someone else can shed some light.

I think you could use a '95 block, the intake manifold is a little different since the DIS module isn't on a '95 I'm pretty sure, I think it matters on what part of '95, I think mid year it went OBD II... The DIS module on the front of the intake manifold is a dead giveaway though, and the crank sensor is externally visible on the OBD II. I'm pretty sure your '93 intake manifold will bolt to the head, it doesn't use a cam sensor on a '93 so that part doesn't matter. I'm not sure on the front seal housing or holes for the crank sensor though, might be easier to find a '89-94 block.
