Truck specs 92 Ford Ranger XLT manual trans push button 4x4.
Issue: So that I knew my 4x4 didn’t work, the lights never turned on for the buttons and really never heard it shift the transfer case. I turned on my truck and the 4 low button was orange. I put it in neutral and depressed the clutch and pressed the button and it stayed on. I put it in reverse for about 10 meters and it made a clunk noise like it might of shifted in or out. The light stayed on but I’m pretty sure my front hubs (automatic) didn’t engage. I have manual locking hubs on the way but I just won’t want to be driving and then the 4x4 is engage and the hubs randomly lock in. Anyone got some tips?

The hubs only engage if the front driveshaft is turned by the transfer case. That means in 4x4 hi or low. Once you get it back in 2wd and the front driveshaft is not being turned by the transfer case, then you can back up 10ft and the hubs will unlock.

I never had any trouble with my auto hubs. It was always the electronic shift system. It is very complex with lots of switches everywhere. Just one little problem and it will not work. You were in neutral and pressed the clutch in, that is good. But there are switches for all that, if they are not working, then the shift computer will not work. And then you have the shift motor, which likes to break all the time also.

Are you in 4x4 now or in 2wd?

P.S. You only need to be in neutral, truck stopped, with the clutch pushed in, for it to get into 4 lo. 4 hi is supposed to go in at any time.
