ok so today i decided to change my timing belt. lined everything up, loosened the tensioner and went to pull the belt off. my dumb a** friend told me i didnt need to take of the crankshaft pulley to do it. found out i had to take it of. tried for a few hours to get the beast off and couldnt do it. tryed "bump" starting it with the ignition, putting in first gear and using a cheater pipe, liquid wrench etc and couldnt get it off. frustrated i put it all back together assuming i had it lined up, tried to start it and it wouldnt start. so here are my two questions:

did i massively screw up my engine if the timing was way off?

and how do i get that stupid pulley off my crankshaft?

It sounds fine when i try to start it, it just doesn't start. I haven't been able to find out a lot about how this generation of ranger's timing is set and what marks to use on it. I would like to get my truck back.

Engine should be fine.

Find a puller to use on it, should be available from most parts stores.

Seriously haha im not happy with him. Anyways, any suggestions on how to get the bolt out of the crankshaft? It bent my breaker bar when i "bump" started it and jamming it in first and using a cheater pipe does nothing. Am i twisting it the right way? Im going counterclockwise. Im tempted to go "borrow" a air wrench from harbor freight.

if you need to "borrow" an impact... you need to BUY one and keep it. period.

If it did not loosen with a starter bump it must be seriously tight. If it bent your breaker bar, imagine how tight it must be, you need a better breaker bar, the bend absorbed the shock.

well...yes correct direction is counterclockwise.

I would try another breaker bar with a bump start, be sure you're positioning it correctly for desired wrenching.
Next I would try the cheater pipe again (a long one) but put it in 4th or 5th gear. Give it slow and steady pressure.
Make sure you set the brakes up also.

Heat

You could put a little heat on it to help get things moving perhaps.

Not too much heat or you'll damage seals and/or the pulley/harmonic balancer.

Check to see if you have spark..... You probably broke the crank sensor which is behind the balancer

Ok, thanks so much for the help and the replies. Im going to buy a impact wrench tonight and a better breaker bar. as for the wrench, do I need the truck in gear when I use it? all the research ive read and searched hasn't done a good job at telling me that and ive never used one before :p and are the marks the same on my year as they are for the 3rd gen rangers? thats also something i cant find out about for sure on my 2nd gen.

k I got the bolt off. I went to lowes and bought the nice breaker bar there and stoped at harbor freight and got a impact wrench. the wrench did nothing but ruin my socket which meant another trio to lowes. i got home and tryed the 4th/5th gear thing with no luck. tryed the "bump" start way and after two tries it worked, but now I cant get the thing that the pulley mounts onto off. any suggestions?

oh and i found a magnet on the crankshaft. where does that go? and what did I break?

and still looking for a timing diagram for the 2nd gen 2.3. it doesnt have any diamonds or whatever markings the 3rd gen have.

thanks!

That magnet is from your broken crank sensor.........

The oil pump sprocket does not need to be timed unless there is a cam sensor

ok sweet then. I wont worry about what position it is in. and with the crank sensor, i need to now replace that right? what are my symptoms of that being broken? and what are the symptoms of my crankshaft being 180 degrees opposite? i think im down to those last few problems.

oh and do i need to replace coolant before i try to start the first time? or can I test it for a few seconds and then add once i know it will start? i have no coolant in the engine at the moment.

sorry for all the questions, I just want to know this stuff before I ruin my engine.
