My 90 B2 crapped the ecm and I got a replacement from Oreilleys. The B2 will start and run fine but I get a check engine light for the map sensor...this one has a maf sensor. On the Oreilley web site it doesn't distinguish between the 2 sensors when ordering a reman ecm so it's a crap shoot getting the right one. My question is: can an ecm like that one be reflashed for a maf sensor or can I rewire a map sensor into the B2? My first 90 B2 I had, was built with a map and this one is a maf. Need some suggestions so I can get this fixed so I can put it up for sale. TIA.

Another question for those that know, does California emissions use a map sensor or maf sensor or either? The ecm I purchased was for Federal emissions so I'm trying to figure out if a sensor is associated with a particular emissions standard or if it doesn't matter.

I think you hit on the problem. Here are the 4 different types of computers available for the 1990 BII

Electronic Control Module, AT, Federal
Electronic Control Module, MT, Federal
Electronic Control Module, AT, California
Electronic Control Module, MT, California

I looked at the emissions diagrams, one shows a vacuum hose to a MAP, and one doesn't.

Do you have your old computer still? I am picking up this number as the California automatic ECM. F07F12A650FA The last two letters vary a little, but the first numbers seem to stay the same.

I sent back the old ecu for a core. It was a used replacement but worked...up until it died after me owning the B2 for 6 years. It was in the B2 when I bought it. The ecu I bought was for Federal emissions auto transmission. This is why I was wondering about differences in the emission standards, maf for emissions and map for the other. I checked with Cardone and they say they don't have an ecu for my vehicle...makes no sense. This is a weird one. I was able to get the Ford part # for an ecu, KK1Z12A650JANP. A local dealership has one but I'm not paying $1060.00 for it. Guess it's time to try and find a used one somewhere.

I have verified that they did have two different systems in a 1990 BII. But I have not verified that the California model was the one with the MAF sensor. But since you have a Federal computer and its not working, we can assume the California automatic version is what you need. And the ECM should be easy to ship, and some of these yards do ship. Here's what I found on www.car-part.com You would think the ones located in CA would have a good chance being a California model ECM.

I really do appreciate the leg work your doing. I have been talking with an eBay company that sells reman ecm's and they were able to use my vin to get the correct ecm for the B2. It was late in the day and I'll have an answer tomorrrow if they have one (I pretty much spent half a day roaming the interweb trying to figure this out). The vin shows it to be a Federal Emissions so there's a good chance that the ecm I got from Cardone was programmed wrong. If they have the ecm I'll order it and see how it goes when it comes in. If it solves all the issues, I'll be one happy camper so I can finally get this advertised for sale. Plus, if it works I can take the ecm back to Oreilley's for a refund.

The replacement ecm does the same thing, still shows a check engine light with obd1 code 22...guess I'll try some of those salvage yards and see if I can come up with something.

Was the replacement you got for Federal emissions? Pretty sure the California Emissions had the MAF, not sure if Federal did for 90. I know to get the stuff to convert my 88 2.9 to MAF I got it from a California emissions. So if you’re sure you have a MAF, you might need the California ECU. I’d have to go look at it to see if there’s still a MAP sensor or not, but I’m thinking not. Just been awhile since I was messing with mine last.

I looked at the vacuum diagrams, there was one with a line going to a MAP, and there was another 1990 emissions diagram with no line going to a MAP.

Well then, MAP would be Federal emissions and MAF would be California

Another good cue to hang on to cores, it's cheaper and better than most other options, everybody drives a used vehicle, and the experienced ones save used parts ;)

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
Maf. Absolutely Cali. There are dozens of calibrations. But the 4 mains are key.

I've come to the conclusion that someone has swapped out the wiring harness in this one. Per the vin number, this one is a Federal Emissions B2. I have tried 2 ecm's for federal and the same issue occurs...check engine light for a map sensor eror. I know the difference between map and maf sensors, been working on cars for over 45 years. If the guy shows up tomorrow, this one is sold. He will have to find and ecu for Cali emissions to fix it. Thank you franklin2 for your help!
