I'm sure yall are tired of this question, but i have only owned mustangs and 1 96 ranger with a 5 speed with 360 miles on it. NOW i have a 89 ranger 2.9 with and A4LD for my kid to use as a work truck. it needs a trans and i just wanna know what years will work with this? will a 4.0 a4ld work?

Welcome to TRS :)

1989 to 1994 A4LD will work as far as the wiring, 1986-1988 had different wiring

If you have a 2.9l V6 engine then yes a 4.0l A4LD will work
If you have a 2.3l(4cyl) then it would not work

Also 2WD or 4x4 have to match, no conversion is possible

thanks so much!! that helps out a lot. If its from a 4.0 explorer, is everything the same, bell housing and tail shaft?

Yes to both, assuming both are 2WD OR both are 4WD

Well, what are we dealing with here? OP mentions 5-speed and A4LD… which are we or are we planning a conversation from manual to auto? If it’s a conversion you need the trans, flex plate, starter, engine harness and computer.

If you have the A4LD auto already, you just need the trans as RonD said.

If you have a manual then any Ranger manual for a 2.9 or 4.0 will work up to 2011 as long as it matches 2wd or 4x4

Deengineer until it is how Blue Oval should have sold it!!
Sounds like the 89 in question has an A4LD but it needs to be replaced.

That’s kinda what I got out of it but figured I’d try to make sure everybody was on the same page

Through 94, Ranger or Explorer. Technically 95-2011 will fit, but you would have to adapt the electrical controls because they are not A4LD but based on the A4LD if that makes sense.
