There's not very many vacuum lines on the 4.0, I think I have a diagram somewhere if you need one. Any check engine light/codes?

My guess would be fuel delivery perhaps?

No, I counted 6 total and I deleted 5 ports lol…
But I need to make time to delete and recheck the codes.

Finally made time to work on it this afternoon. I replaced a shock bushing, Pulled the upper Radius arm bolts from the beams, trimmed them down and put them back in. When I installed the dash I broke the actuator cable for the heater blend door. I fixed that today by replacing the climate controls. Then I took it to town and filled it up. I’m getting somewhere around 18 mpg. When it’s warmed up, I shut it off and start it up, it runs like it should. After 2-3 miles it starts to shudder and loses power.

So I put a couple hundred miles on it today. I discovered that all of the upper intake nuts were loose. I tighthem down and it helped a bunch. My fault for not checking the PO’s work. Anyways, she’s got plenty of low end, then falls on her face after 2500 rpms and struggles and slightly shutters, trying to get past 3k in 4th and 5th on flat ground. If I shut it off, start it up and take off, it runs like a stripe’d ass’d ape. I feel like it’s either a faulty fpr or fuel pump. I disconnect the fpr vacuum line and it has no effect. The fuel filters, fpr, and fuel pump are brand new 6-9 months ago.
Anyone delt with something similar?

@RonD you’re the best interwebz diagnoser I’ve seen, care to tell me how many dumbs I am for not seeing the super simple thing here?

Congrats on the upcoming new family member :)

Had to look at what you have
1991 Explorer 4.0l with automatic swapped into 1989 Ranger

Low power above 2,500rpms
Lack of fuel pressure or lack of air flow, in or OUT(exhaust)

But the computer reset(key off and on) restoring power above 2,500rpms should negate air flow issue, and even fuel pressure
So I would look inside computer on the circuit board first, signs of corrosion and leak capacitors
Also inspect connector

Did you ever add a CEL(check engine light)?
good to have that
If so does it come on with key on and then go off while cranking engine over?

Long shot is SAW/SPOUT wire from computer to EDIS-6 module, it does spark advance for engine load, its the "vacuum advance", without load advance engine would be very sluggish accelerating at any RPM, so not just above 2,500

You can test FPR by removing its fuel line, cold engine, put a towel down under FPRs fuel connection
Cycle key off and on 2 times, no fuel should come out as pressure should be under 30psi, FPR releases fuel(with no vacuum) at about 43psi
If fuel is coming out then replace FPR, its leaking
But computer reset would have no effect on FPR working or not

Thank you!!!! Yes the cel works, it’s throwing codes due to the manual trans swap and A/C iirc. I forget which codes, I plan to run another diagnostic check.

But I have bad news. I was out hunting this week and my trans went out. I was driving in 24-30” of snow. It’s stuck in gear. First it was stuck in 2nd. Then while messing with it, it’s now stuck in 3rd. I plan to swap the fm146 out for a M5R1.

This is where it went out. I tried to get it turned around but failed.

Yes sir. Luckily It happened in a place where I had cell service. I’m going to be buying a garmin tracking unit with “in reach” not sure if that’s the correct spelling. But it’s a text messaging system built in to the new gps dog tracking units.

Maybe buy a dog sled and train those hounds to mush?

I mean... if you can teach them to read text messages... why not!

Well, she’s finally home and in the garage! Ordered a M5OD-R1 for it. Should be here in 2-3 weeks.
If you need a new trans, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another from Mid West Transmission out of Minnesota. They were very professional and have significantly lower prices than anyone else I found. It was around $1225 shipped. The local Auto-parts stores wanted $1600 or more. The transmission shops wouldn’t even order one for me if it didn’t match the vin or wouldn’t order at all.
