Does anyone know are the 89 and newer heads compatible on an 86-88 block? Bolt diameter the same, intake the same? etc

i've been researching the heads lately since I'm putting out the white smoke

with the 89+ heads, they're the same just beefed up a bit since the older ones liked to crack so much
if you're looking at swapping heads, a port match job may be worth your while as well

You can use the newer style heads on an older block just fine. I have an 89 and had to pull the heads about a year ago and, come to find out, had an old style on the passenger side and a new style on the drivers side.

I appreciate the reply! Good news beings my short block is back from the machinist and I have new 89+ style heads in the box on my bench lol!!! Just ordered about $1k of externals for the engine bay; water pump, thermostat, exhaust manifolds, starter, distributor, power steering pump/gearbox, hoses, fuel tank and pump hell if I can remember the rest... The project deepens...

My credo
Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.
Sounds like you're going to have a good motor when you're done.

The peanut gallery demands pictures! :)

@RumPunch - Thanks for leading me to your build thread.

I like how you're doing this B2, and I can tell that it's going to be a very nice one when you do get it done.

I'm going to be watching your progress; great build thread, and keep up on the updates!

P.S.- nice shop, too!

Thanks @RobbieD I am doing my best, figured I am better off to do it right the first time then get bit in the ass later on. It is a slow process and I have a LOT going on personally but am really looking forward to this and hope it is as capable as I think it will be once I am done(if a "project" is ever done) I may be picking up a 2 door Explorer tonight if time allows as a donor for axles not that they will be getting built anytime soon but planning 488's and Ox cable lockers in them, just need to find that money tree...
