been working on my 89 2.9 ranger, and was wondering if there were any gauge clusters, with a higher rpm and speedo, that'd bolt right in for a reasonable price

I am not aware of anything that is bolt-in. There were some super rare high MPH speedometers for earlier Rangers but not for 2nd gen trucks, at least not that I'm aware of anyway.

Probably your easiest route is to build your own gauge cluster and use Autometer or other aftermarket gauges.

How fast are you looking to spin your 2.9L?

I may be wrong but I think most Rangers have a 95 mph speed limiter built into the electronics. There might be a year range on that but I know the later ones have it.

Obd1 rangers dont have any speed governors as far as I could tell. Every gen 2 got an 85mph speedo & 6k tach (if equipped). 4 cyl rangers did get a higher red line mark (5.5k) vs the v6 trucks (5k). I have seen a person graft a foxbody GT 140mph speedo into a '93 cluster before that came out really nice. Ive also seen the '85-'88 Turbocoupe instrument cluster fitted into 2nd gen rangers which I believe have a 6500 or 7000rpm tach and there was a FMS 140mph speedo available for that cluster.

Heres a 1st gen Ranger FMS 140mph speedo. This one is going in my GT.
