i have an 88 2.3 5 speed ext cab ranger and im having a timing issue.

Problems:
its seems to idle abit high around 950-1000
anything after about 1/4 throttle the engine just bogs out and looses all power
i can only get up to about 55mph or 65 mph on a good day or down hill:D
im sucking gas like crazy i can smell raw gas when i shut it off and my fuel gauge tells me so:D

it seems to me the timing is to advanced and is advancing to soon

any ideas on it?

That screams of another fuel pressure regulator. Check pressure at the schrader valve or pull the vacuum line off and if you smell or see fuel its toast. It will also go into your brake vac booster line. You getting raw fuel dripping out the cat or muffler? that may be where you are smelling it.

I recently replaced the regulator not to long back and i dont see any fuel leaking around it or when i pull the vac line to it.

also it only bogs out after 1/4 throttle when im in gear going down the road

when im in the drive way sitting still i can floor it and have no problem.

Mine was doing the same thing except it would idle a bit high...turned out I had a vac leak on the intake base of the carb...so check for vacuum leaks...hoses off, cracked, or not fitting correctly...

Could be other things, but the bogging is what got me to closely inspect it...it would idle till the cows came home (they never did though) but as soon as I put it in gear and tried to move it the engine would die out without WOT...
