Hi all, this has been my little retirement project here and there when things are slow. So recently I had done a lot of tune up stuff, replaced everything that could have ever pointed to a terrible rough idle, including idle air control valve, MAP sensor, pressure regulator and so on. So I replaced the fuel injectors and that finally fixed the rough idle issue and hard starting issue.

The problem now is that it has black smoke coming out the exhaust, especially a lot when the gas pedal is pressed, and it never did before. It is timed right; I have checked it by removing the SPOUT it shows correct with the timing light.

I have no clue as what to do now and was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction. I have a video on my phone of the engine idling and what comes out the exhaust when gas is pressed but don't know how to make that available for viewing.

What's the fuel pressure?

Fuel pressure reads 32 I think,

The plugs were black and sooty and smells like fuel for sure. Sorry about the blurry pic, I tried but the phone wasn't focusing for whatever reason, but I think you can tell.

I guess I can try and rebuild the old injectors.

I had you check fuel pressure... because anytime you have a fuel delivery problem you have to start with fuel pressure. At 32psi you should be good and pressure is not causing your issue. I would just pop the vacuum hose from the pressure regulator and ensure the hose doesn't have fuel in it. If it doesn't... about the only thing that cause rich mixtures would be your injectors. Maybe they leak or are to large for your application. It's always a crap shoot with replacement injectors.

I think the best way to address injectors is to actually clean, test and rebuild your existing factory injectors. It may have ran better when you replaced them simply because you had plugged/dirty injectors.

I'm also a firm believer in replacing spark plugs in your Ford with whatever came in them from the factory. Those don't look like Motorcraft plugs. What brand are they? I've never had good luck using anything but Motorcraft or Autolite plugs.

Not sure on what brand those plugs are, I'll check on that. I looked at the dirty old injectors and ordered the rebuild kits. I think it's gonna end up being the injectors cause the black smoke was a new symptom I never saw before, even with those plugs, and I only saw it after replacing the injectors. The smoke is so bad it's almost like rolling coal in a diesel, lol!!

Sounds like the culprit.
