I sold my fullsize bronco and bought a 86 Bronco II.
When cranking to start it made a pretty good grinding noise. I thought it was the starter so I replaced it. Noise is still their. Goes away when it's running.
Do these starters need shimmed?
Thanks

There is a hole in the plate between the engine and trans that locates the starter. If that plate is missing, that hole is damaged, or either of the dowel pin holes is damaged the starter can be misaligned and cause a grinding noise.

Ok how do I fix it. I did not see any alignment pins or a hole. I ll look again. I don’t recall anything like that on the new starter.
