85 ranger voltmeter and fuel gauge not working. The gas gauge stays at empty and the battery gauge stays in the middle no matter what, even if the battery is disconnected. Any suggestions?

The original battery gauge is a ammeter, not a voltmeter. They never moved much even when new, so don't worry about that one. On the fuel gauge, if you can get to it, go back to the top of the tank and take the wires off the sending unit. With the key on, engine off, short the two wires in the plug together. The gauge should swing full scale, give it time they are slow. If that works, pull the jumper out, the gauge should swing full scale the opposite way. If it passes this test, the wiring and the gauge are good, the sending unit in the tank is faulty.
