Its a dana 70 rear. Sterlings don't have a fill plug in the cover. That should be a great dana 70 though. I believe that year came with 35 spline rear shafts factory.

BTW the trans should be a T19 4spd and I should have a BW1356 tcase
Thanks for bringing up info on the trans. and tcase, that was gonna be my next question....

I thought Ford didnt use the 13-56 until '87. An '84 should have the 208 or the 13-45.
I believe the 1 tons and diesels came with a 1356. I tore apart a 85 F350 that had a 460 and it had a 1356.

The early 80's "bullnose" F trucks came with both. Typically, if it had a T18/19 it had a BW tcase (STILL don't know the diff between a 1345 and 1356), and if it had a NP435, it was backed by a NP208. Not always, but I'd say 99% of the time. There were a few that got "oddball" combos...then again, someone could've swapped a diff one in, too. Anyway, just some food for thought :D

In case you didnt know, that Dana 50 TTB front is basically garbage. You can put the D50 center in to a D44 and get a bigger ring gear and the brakes (I believe) are the same as the D60, but that's really the only good about them.

The 10.25 in the back is an OK axle, if it's not the semi-floater (I dont think they ever came with the semi's in diesels) They had problems with the threads on the pinion for the yoke. Basically the yoke would eventually work it's way loose and destroy itself and the pinion. They also like to leak from the pinion seal.

I think we already determined the rear is a Dana70 and not a 10.25 Sterling.

For its intended purpose it is fine though. Dad has had his for about 20 years and the only problem with it is one of the guys catching the hub on something and breaking the cap off. Balljoints and brakes of course over that time frame too but that is to be expected on a truck pushing 300k miles
