I would replace the copper washer. I don’t remember was size the bolt head is.

Both times I just re-used the copper washer. No one had it, and in my experience they are re-usable unless they are really tore up.

I can't remember what size it was, but maybe it was a 18mm from what you are saying. You can't beat a metric wrench set that has ALL the sizes from 10mm up to 19mm. I find myself using the odd ball sizes more often that I would have thought. 18mm is a oddball size, as well as 16mm. But the set I have has them all in 1mm increments.

For anyone that may need to know, I damaged my thrust washer when reinstalling my oil filter adapter on my 83 2.8 ranger. The washer can be replaced with Dorman- HD solutions copper drain plug gasket #095-5002CD. I found a 3 pack on Amazon for $14 but looking the part up on the Dorman site it seems to be used pretty commonly on big rig diesel engine oil pan plugs so I would imagine you could find them at a truck shop or diesel parts supply.

Yup, change those copper washers (gaskets) everytime. Use them on the drain bolt, it's a German thing.

That's great information - I have been deep into leaks on these several times in the past couple years. Here is some more info about these on the 2.9 and 4.0's if anyone finds this and needs the part #'s:
