I just picked up an Explorer 8.8 that is missing the ID tag. It came with a junkyard tag that says it's got 3.55 gears, but the guy I got it from says it's got 4.10s. Either way I don't care, I just wanted the housing and disk brakes, but I am curious. It's also got a limited slip, if it matters.

The ring gear is stamped with the following:

A 2 410 E7TW CB 11 39-617T

So from this I am assuming it has 4.10s. Correct? I'm not sure because my old 7.5 definitely had 3.45's, and the ring gear was stamped with something totally different.

I picked up an 8.8 with 4.10s and 410 was visibly stamped on the end of the pinion gear. It's not that clear, but towards the top you can see it.

It has 3.55s. The "11 39" numbers are the pinion and ring gear teeth, 39/11 = 3.55.

Huh?

I've yet to see a ring gear stamped with the actual ratio....certainly not in a factory application...

I have only seen them stamped with the "devidable" number such as "41 11" or "41 10", etc. In other words, the tooth count of the ring and pinion.

And it is not at all uncommon to find a 3:27 or a 3:55 in an Explorer.

This is odd. The 3.27s I pulled out of my 8.8 had 327 stamped on the ring gear on the left and over on the right it had 11-36. 36/11=3.27.

count the teeth on the ring and divide that into the amount of teeth on the pinion.

I know about counting teeth...just was curious because I lose count a lot :D

3.55 sounds pretty logical, just seemed like way too much of a coincidence that there was "410" stamped on the ring gear.

So for an update on this - it does have 4.10s. 41 ring gear, 10 pinion. It was bugging me the last few days so I had to be sure.

Maybe this is just an 8.8 thing? I kind of wish I had saved the gears out of my old 7.5 to see if I missed anything. I am pretty sure there was nothing even close to 345 stamped anywhere.
