So I got a 79 FW D44 from the J-yard. I have completely stripped it, narrowed it and am now ready to start ordering parts to re-assemble. I'm looking at these axles from wild horses.

And this rebuild kit from Jeff's

My questions are, Is there a better way to get all this stuff IE: Less expensive, better product for price, one stop shopping?

Also, what is a "slinger" they come with the axles?

You can buy shafts and u-joints through Jeff's too. Just not chromoly ones if I remember correctly. I just has the passenger shaft sent to Dutchman motorsports and they shortened it and resplined it for an early bronco. Then threw new u-joints in both stock shafts for now.

The Slinger goes on the stub axle up against the backside of the spindle.

I bought most of my parts locally through offroad shops or Napa/Reibes auto parts stores.

I've done lots of business with JBG, and they've always been good to deal with. It's pretty hard to beat there pricing as well, I haven't found anybody that beats them on spicer ball joints. You could probably piece that kit together cheaper, but you'd really have to look around you might save an extra $10-15 which is not really worth it IMO.

I wouldn't purchase chromo axles and run them with standard u-joints like the wild horses kit. The 760's they include are better than a factory u-joint but no where near the strength of a super joint. I'd spend a little more money and get the chromo kit with super joints from JBG. The "cheaper" chromo axles they sell are still yukons, but apparently they can sell them for cheaper when they don't advertise a brand name.

I originally thought what you said is good because if the joint lets go, it usually takes out a shaft. I then noticed this on JBG site. "There is no roller bearings in the super U-joint and it will dry up and burn out from speed."
This will not work for me as I may drive it on the road in snowy conditions.

The reasons I like the wild horses axles better are 1) $50 cheaper 2) they come machined for full clips. JBG has the complete rebuild kit as one part number which is nice!

Complete offroad has a complete axle shaft kit with U-joints for $499. Am I missing something? Why are the prices all over the place?

My set came from Toms Bronco Parts.
Forgot how much, but way cheaper than that, with spicer 760s, and IIRC a lifetime warranty.
