I had a extended cab ranger as a parts vehicle with same 2.3l engine same yr as well.shifter location with in different spots.one was closer to dash and the other was closer to seats.oem trans on both.but different underneath.not sure how many different trans options they had in the 80s rangers.but mine sits where ramchargers does now with his t5 in it.

For a t5 to sit where yours sits most people get a front shift tail shaft from an s-10 like ramcharger mentioned.or they buy one from modern driveline.im putting in a t5 from a 1995 mustang.if mine sits anyways close to where yours does I'd be pretty happy.

It will sit the same as mine. Unless you S10 tail house it. T5 is a T5.... input shaft length and spline count and gearing may vary depending on the year and manufacturers vehicle its in. Sn95 I think has a longer input shaft than a foxbody. Or maybe thats v6 T5's for the 164 tooth bellhousing.

The picture above... the shifter may be where it needs to be for you, but it looks to me like it is much farther back than factory. Look at the shifter base. It doesn't even sit within the factory tunnel cover. If both seats were in it would be between them. Forget it if you have the 60/40 split seats.
But thanks for posting the pic, it shows where a foxbody Mustang T5 shifter will come up very well.

EDIT- Just reread the posts and realized JungleJoe made the comment about perfect location but picture is from RamCharger90.

It isn't horrible and it will work with bench seats. I have seen trucks with benchs and T5s before. If you are concerned about OEMish location s10 stail housing it. Or go with a M5odr2 even then you need a certain year range for a 4.2L v6 or you need a custom shifter like I needed before.

It seems like the shifter location is closer to dash with your t5 or m5odr2 then with my old 2.3l trans.mine literally sits right in front of your console does now without your floor cup holder thing u have there.old post figured id reply a tad later.

It was closer to the dash with the m5odr2 it was from a 88-95 5.0 f150. Thats why I needed the custom shifter. I hate none oem looking stuff also but custom car some times you have to sacrifice minor oem details

I'm running a foxbody t5
I did that too! Early '90's Mazda B2300. I don't remember the shifter as being an issue, and mine was a bench seat.

The biggest hurdle is the hydraulic slave cylinder. I used one from a KIA Sephia.

Since you are RWD, a T-5 is the way to go. I really wanted the 4WD version for my BII, but they are rare.
