I kind a like the idea of using what you already have, therefore I’ve got a question for everyone. I’ve got a good 5 L disconnected to an AOD. Can I use this in a Ranger without having to modify the transmission tunnel? I’m sure this questions probably come up before but I just couldn’t seem to find any answers on the search bar. Has anyone ever done this sort of swap before? Is there anything I should be wary of?

I have never done this swap. But from what I read, if that setup is from a car it should fit. If it's from a truck, they use a larger flywheel and bellhousing and it doesn't fit very well without modifications or a slight body lift.

I did one a long time ago... so memory isn't perfectly clear. But I do remember doing a little bit of hammer work on the tunnel seam. Wasn't to bad and body lift wasn't an option as I wanted to keep it low.

I have done this swap I used an AOD out of a 85 f150 2 wheel drive. I got a conversion kit to mate to the stock transfer case. To put it in the truck required a lot of hammering of the body seam. The top 2 bolts are no problem but the next one down on the drivers side is a real pain to tighten. The filler tube also need some massaging to fit as well. I have a half inch body lift but it is more so I can get to the back header bolts on the drivers side. There is also a lot of work needed to the AC/heater housing that needs to be done. The transmission mount had to be modified slide back so I could use the factory frame holes and the holes for the mount need to be modified for the mount to work. This is on an 88 ranger 4x4. Good luck with your project

87 BII 4X4. I'm running a 5.0 with an AOD. I did a good bit of hammering on the tunnel seam and got it to fit fine with no body lift. Looking back, a body lift would have made things much easier.

I am running the same combo, 68 302 with early non computer AOD. when placing the unit together, was no issues. however, did it the opposite of most and placed the cab onto the frame with mounted engine and trans in place. did have to massage the tunnel to make it fit. (only a bit) then had to make a new shifter floor panel for the shifter to fit. hope this helps

post 77 shows the cab in air.

post 82 has the re-made shifter.
