I've found several different Explorers in u-pull it yards. Should I assume that if I were to take the parts from the v8 mods that it would be about a "nut n bolt' type swap? Does a Sport Trac and an Explorer share the same engine bays and mounts? If they do, a 4.6 should fit right?

My credo
If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
The Sport Tracs with 4.6's have the same engine bay as 2002-2011 Explorers, not the same as earlier Ranger based Explorers. Anything will fit if you have the cash and fabrication skills, a 302 would be a lot easier to fit in there.

The 4.6 is a massive engine. Like walt said, depends what years your working with. A 4.6 will not fit in a ranger or ranger based explorer without tons of modifications. It will fit in a later explorer or explorer sport trac since they are entirely different trucks than the ranger/explorer. But a 4.0 to 4.6 swap in one of those is still quite an undertaking.

96-01 Explorer = 01-05 Sport Trac
02-10 Explorer = 07-10 Sport Trac

The 4.6 will not fit in a 01-05 Trac, it's too wide. It was a factory option in the 07-10 Trac.
Now you CAN get a wrecked 98-01 5.0 Explorer and swap the driveline and electronics into a 01-05 Trac. There is a long thread about it at www.explorerforum.com .
