Well I appear to be stuck.

Background: '91 Explorer ECU and harness into '89 Ranger xcab.

I am using the Ranger headlight harness and the 4.0 engine harness.

I have the Word document that I got from Bronc(I believe it was originally done by Will?) and I have half the wiring done.

The area where I am stuck is on the 2 round connectors that interface with the transmission.

On the document, they are labeled connectors 136 (female 8-pin grey) and 116 (female 8-pin black)

The 4.0 side is where the problem lies. The 4.0 harness I have is from an auto and my truck is a manual.

The auto harness colors don't jive with the diagram and I can't find any detail on these in my EVTM books.

AFAIK, the connector from my Ranger only has the backup lights and Neutral sensing switch on it (not counting the temp sensor wiring that's in the harness). Can I just ground the NSS? If so, which wire?

Anyone have detailed info on the manual transmission connectors?

Thanks!

The clutch should have a switch on the back of it that is tied into the neutral safety switch. On an auto, there is a jumper plugged into where the switch would be, but the connector is still there.

When you turn the key to start, the current runs from the key switch through a pink wire, through the triple function switch--coming out still pink, through the firewall, through that C116 connector (now it changes to red/light blue stripe) and down to the starter. On an automatic it stays pink as it comes out of the C116 and it heads down to the tranny neutral safety switch and then comes back red/lightblue stripe, then goes to the starter.

If you want to bypass it, run the pink wire going into C116 straight to the starter solenoid. I wouldn't though--of course I'm prone to brain farts.

Could I just leave the bypass on the clutch switch?

I've thought about doing that simply to be able to start while in gear.

Starting a manual transmission vehicle while on a steep hill can be real exciting for the few milliseconds that the clutch is depressed :woot:

And the tires are almost guaranteed to spin when the clutch grabs.

Much easier to shift into low range and start it while clutch out/first gear. Keeps the blood pressure down too. :icon_cheers:

No, don't ground it... the NSS connects two wires together,
one is Red with a Light Blue stripe and the other is Pink.

At the connector that the transmission harness connects to
there is a loop of wire connecting the two pins together, so
there are TWO places where the signal to the starter can
be interrupted, the Neutral Safety Switch and the Clutch
Triple-function switch.
You'll notice if you look at the engine/trans side of the manual
trans "grey connector" that there is a short loop of Red/Lt-Blue
stripe wire jumpering the contacts.

That grey connector (and the black connector alongside it) aren't actually part of the "engine" harness, they are the instrument (guages except for coolant temp, oil LEVEL sensor and the 4.0 Evaporative emmissions Cannister purge solenoid as well as the wiring to the transmission.

Hate to dig this up from the pits of eternity past,

But today, My 4.0 RUNS!!:yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:

Finally got a chance to finish everything up today.

Even after all the headaches, I must say it was worth it.

The 4.0 turns the 33s seemingly without effort.
