Just picked up a really nice Eddie Bauer ford explorer but it dose not run when I crank it it obvious that the timing is out and there’s a popping sound coming from the front drivers side of the engine has anyone else had this issue and know what is wrong with it and what is is need to do to fix it, never messed with sohc
thanks

All I know is, they had terrible trouble with the timing chains and tensioners on the sohc engines. You start to thinking "well, I can handle changing the timing chain and chain guides". Until you find out they had a chain up front and the chain at the back of the engine. The engine needs to be pulled for the back chain.

That’s what I’ve seen online but the back isn’t making any noise it’s just the front one

If you think it jumped time... pull the valve covers and check valve events.

I would probably drop the lower oil pan and check for timing chain guide trash in the pan.

Boy... it sure sounds like something went sideways in there.

Pull the plugs and do a compression test.

The last SOHC I saw with jumped chains cranked like the plugs were out of it. Yours doesnt.
Okay I’ll try that post an update I want to figure out exactly what’s wrong before I spend the money on parts

I did a carfax on it and it’s been religiously maintained its whole life and it’s in such great shape and would it be worth saving or should I just part it out? And make some money back

up to you.

there is a video in that parts link.

if you have to sequence the cams its a bit more involved....might be valve damage...

i would likely just swap in a 400 dollar running engine and drive it. but that is me. it costs more then that to lift the heads and do the chains... so a good runner with a 90 day warranty would get the nod if such a deal can be had.

I had the now famous rattle at startup, my sons are better at the major motor work. I bought a remanufactured motor, and they did the swap in a little less than a week. They both have full time jobs so that was doing the work in their spare time. Now I have a new motor and no worries about it as long as I replace the tensioners at about 100000 miles. It was the guide on the rear timing chain. The remanufactured motor cost me $3500.00 from the local NAPA. That was about 4 years ago so the price has probably gone up.
