hello, i have a 1990 ranger that was swapped to a 1992 4.0. I cant seem to get it to run right. it has a shake at idle, and around 3000 rpms it sputters until about 3500. i put new plugs and wires and it has not changed. just in doing some reading into those issues i have been lead to believe its the cam synchronizer. is this a correct assumption? and if so where is it located and how difficult is it to change? thanks in advance!

1992 4.0l has no Cam sensor, well only sold in California 4.0l's had them

It has the 4.0l Computer right?

Firing order on Coil Pack is
3 4
2 6
1 5
front
5 6 4 side gets mixed up , make sure its correct, follow EACH WIRE to its cylinder

How are you plugging in a 4 wire coil pack with a 2.3l harness?????

yes the plug wires are in correct order. that is also a great question. i am positive my engine has a cam synchronizer on the back of the motor. to clarify. i bought it swap half done. i just made things work and run. adms08 helped me.

just to clarify its actually a 1994 motor from an explorer and a 1991 harness from a ranger in the engine bay

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
If is a 1991 pcm and harness it won't give a hoot about the cam sensor.

94 pcm..... you need to add it in....

Any codes?

Yes, Explorer 4.0l had cam sensor

In 1994 the cam sensor is 3 wire, a 12v key on wire and a ground wire
3rd wire is for the sensor it will run to PCM pin 24

1995-1998 Ranger and explorer 4.0l OHV all had cam sensors, so hit wrecking yard to get the connector with some leads, the harness won't work from those years, but sensor connector will
Red wire is 12v(key on)
Dark Blue/orange stripe, sensor wire to pin 24
Black/white, ground, to any local ground point

In 1999 Ford switched to a 2 wire cam sensor, 1994 PCM wouldn't understand the signal from one of these

Ok thanks. I also forgot I had an pcm for a 91 4.0 and I hooked it up and it seems to have fixed the issue
