In process of getting a 4.0 ranger and need some exhaust advice.

Have looked through and read exhaust threads, and watched videos for an exhaust system. I have narrowed it down to possibly a flowmaster super 40 and flowmaster super 44. Can some of you guys give me some advice on which of these will sound the best on an older 4.0?

What size pipe would you suggest?

I wanna stay with a single in single out system. Don't want anykind of a dual exhaust setup.

i wouldnt use either. just a straight pipe out the back with the factory converter.

a 2.5 in dynomax welded straight thru or oem resonator if you want some burbles.

i dont like how a v6 sounds so i usually keep a regular muffler on em. but those cost more.

Not a fan of straight pipe sound. Looking for a mellow but decent sound. Nothing loud and obnoxious.

aeroturbine and spintech can produce different results.

rpm range the straight pipe reversion is stout. generally quieter then the flowmaster off idle.

maybe search wew toobz for different setups to try to gat an idea. very subjective. if you like flowmaster then buy both and try them.

flo-pro and flowmaster ran my engine 10 degrees hotter hauling ass on the freeway over my dynomax.

Run with Bobby's straight pipe solution, but be sure to add a whistle tip.

I recommend a Borla "Pro XS" muffler, they were originally named the "Turbo" model or line. It is a strait though design, they make them in several offsets, if needed.

They are not loud but do add a distinctive, performance sound. They are not particularly expensive, though made of stainless steel. I bought my first from the Borla Turbo line in the early 1990's...still have it, looks almost the same as the first time I used it.

I have more recently bought on separate occasions 2 more but from the renamed Pro XS line. I noticed the similarities, called Borla and asked; they verbally confirmed that the former Turbo line was renamed the Pro XS line. Sounded great with a stock 2.9l in a Ranger, had a dual outlet on a 94 Firebird and currently will be using a set of them in a dual exhaust set up.

With a stock OHV 4.0l I would use a single 2.5" and tubing but you could get away with the factory sized tubing if you wanted.

borla is a beautiful version of a dynomax welded... definitely a fine product. i only buy the dynomax because it is 15-40 bux cheaper for specific applications and my mufflers get the shit kicked out of them.

but for sure....1st rate product. thing is...they do not sound like flowmaster....and if you want flowmaster sound...best to just buy that.

Great information from you guys. Plans have changed, no 4.0. I will be reworking a 3.0. Are these straight through mufflers good on a 3.0?

Heard some 3.0 engines with flowmasters and they sound good. Don't know which series these were. Anybody here using a Flowmaster on a 3.0? Currently or previously.

i have a flowmaster on my 3.0 right now. it was a left over muffler that came off my old 93 chevy 1500 with the 5.7 v8. its a single in, dual out and actually sounds very good.

i have the duals coming out in front of the passenger rear wheel and its a very quiet set up, unless you rev it up. then its bit louder, but deeper

my wife didn't even say anything about the exhaust being changed form stock to this set up. i like my exhaust system to be louder, i grew up with glass paks on my 65 mustang so i want everything to sound like a hotrod. this isn;t loud like that but does give it a cooler sound. i will post pics later, if i remember, because at work, my phone gets no service so i can't load pics

I have several years experience driving 3.0l powered Rangers (company fleet trucks). I would use the same brand/style muffler as I recommend but in 2¼ with 2¼" tubing.

Your setup is same as the lightning style. Interested in seeing it when your able to upload some pictures. Do you know which series flowmaster your using?
