I recently swapped in a 4.0 from a 91 explorer into my 90 bronco2. I noticed the 4.0 had a camshaft sensor on it, but no wires/connectors found anywhere to hook it up. I remember when I did this same swap a few years ago, that engine did not have a cam sensor. I do not know if the engine I just swapped in was the original engine from that explorer or not. So my question is, what year did they add the cam sensor? I am wanting to replace my injectors, but from what I am seeing, the injectors changed in 93?

In Calif all 4.0ls from 1990 on had Cam sensors??

In other states it was 1995 and up, may have been earlier in Explorers??
But it has more to do with the YEAR of the computer you are using than the year of engine, if computer has cam sensor circuit then it will set a code if there is no cam sensor connected

It probably was a replacement motor and the person forgot to get the oil pump drive from the original engine and then couldn't find one, so just left the Cam synchro in place as the oil pump drive

Look at the year of the Computer, PCM, get injectors for that year, only the computer cares about the size/pounds of the injectors, too small and you will get Rich codes, too larger and you get Lean codes
PCM part number on the label will start with the year
F0 = 1990
F1 = 1991
F2 = 1992
F3 = 1993
ECT..............

Part number will look like these: http://www.fuelinjectedford.com/page17.html

In the last picture F4ZF-12A650-EA is part number for a 1994 PCM
Above that is an E9(1989) and an E7(1987)

12A650 is the part number of any PCM, Ford still uses that number in 2019

Thanks for the info!. I checked out the pcm and it says F0. So my best guess is the engine had been swapped out to a later engine with different injectors. Perhaps that is why it smells like it is running rich...

Computer would compensate for different size injectors, after first warm up, but would set a code if there was too big a difference from its pre-programmed size injectors

So shouldn't run rich, it would just set a Rich Code and engine would run with correct air/fuel mix

Whether or not you have a cam sensor depends on the year of the donor and the donor itself... 92 and older Explorers did NOT have cam sensors at all, the provision was there in the block but it had a cover over it. Some late 93's did, all 94's did.

Rangers did not at all, ever, up to 94 at least from what I am aware of. If you've got a harness and computer from a vehicle that did not have a cam sensor, you can simply leave it unplugged and never worry about it unless it begins making noise (they make a chirping noise when they wear out.)

On that same note 93 up had different heads that are supposedly better than 92-older. Less susceptible to cracking or something. I have read that they are also NOT interchangeable so you can't just swap them onto older engines - compression ratio ends up being too high or something like that, the pistons have to come over as well. I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong about that.

My main question is, there are different injectors for 91-92 explorers than for 93-96 explorers. Which injectors should I get?

Just to clarify what Shran said, there is not a cover plate on the cam sensor hole, that hole is for the oil pump drive.

As seen on many engines that had distributors, the distributor hole was also for the oil pump drive, 4.0l was made the same way but never had a distributor, just the drive, and then later a Cam synchro tower with oil pump drive attached below

4.0l Oil pump drive seen here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Ranger-Explorer-Mountaineer-Oil-Pump-Drive-Gear-Shaft-Assembly-4-0L-New-OEM-/232251917760

It sits flush to block when installed

Get the injectors for the 1991, your computer is 1990 so that would be the closest match

I was confused because of your earlier reply : "
Computer would compensate for different size injectors, after first warm up, but would set a code if there was too big a difference from its pre-programmed size injectors

So shouldn't run rich, it would just set a Rich Code and engine would run with correct air/fuel mix"

Ill get the injectors for a 91. It is weird that the injectors for a 93-96 are a bit cheaper in cost...

Then go for the less expensive models I can't see them being too big unless they were for Flex fuel, which Ford didn't offer in those years as far as I know

Fuel injector size is set by the horse power the engine can make, which is determined by the amount of air the engine can use and so the amount of fuel it can use with that amount of air

There wasn't any big changes in horsepower for the 4.0l OHV engines from 1990-2000

Supposedly the later injectors are different (high vs low impedance. Not sure which is which anymore.). However, I'm running the newer style injectors on a 92 ECU with no noticeable problems. Don't know if it's work the other way around or not.:dntknw:

I stand corrected. Good to know.
