302 rebuild

Alright so i finally put a 302 that has been at my dads for ever on an engine stand to start rebuilding it. From what the previous owner (my dads friend) told me, the motor is an 83', is bored .060, and ran like a beast. It was in his mustang that he wrecked, which was an 83. So now i have it and want to rebuild it since it has been sitting forever. I planned on just taking it apart, have the heads and block checked for cracks, and looked over. Replacing all the old gaskets, and maybe port and polishing heads and intake. So i have just started tearing it apart. Basically i was just looking for any pointers, tricks, advice or anything you guys might be able to share with me to make this process go smoothly and not let myself destroy anything. Anything you guys have would be great!

If it's an 83 block bored 60 over, don't expect it to last long. The 80-85 blocks had less metal in them than all the other years.

Really look at the camshaft closely. My experience with engines built by others is that they sometimes(more often then not) use a cheap cam with case hardened lobes that tend to go flat rather quickly

Good idea. Never new that but ill be sure to check. I got everything off down to the rotating assembly. Tomorrow ill have a puller for the balancer so i can take of the time cover and so on. Then ill pull the rockers and rods and get the heads off. Hopefully ill have a camera for the rest of the tear down. More tips please!

I'd find a new block if I was you. .060 over on that block is gunna give cooling issues and you'll end up with a cracked block after all the work of rebuilding it. Unless you like doing things twice just for the expirience.

In my opinion I wouldnt take a stock 302 block over .040... you could probably pick up a 302 block for like 100 bucks from the scrap yard. or buy a brand new one from summit for $500... just my 2 cents though

By the way this is for a 1965 Mustang.

what are the specs on it?i have a 65 coupe that came factory with bench seats. only 14,000 made that way-out of about 600,000 mustangs made in 64-66. hopefully you don't have the same crappy 2.79 gear ratio in the 8 inch.

that production date is E- for 80's and 0 for the year it was made in the 80's... so it would be a 1980 block i believe

E0AE is the engineering prefix, not the actual date it was made. These blocks were produced for at least 2-3 years, until the 1982 model year. The date code is the number/letter/number combo next to the engineering numbers. Looks like it's cast into a tag with screws. In anycase that block weighs 120 lbs, 2 lbs less than the 85 roller block and 6 lbs less than the 86-2001 roller blocks(126 lbs). The previous production casting was the D8VE which had 16 lbs more iron weighing in at 136 lbs.

No my mustang has buckets. Its got the pony interior, which makes the door panels expensive. Its a black coupe that my dad boute with a 351W in it. He took it out planning to put this motor in. He gave it to me four years ago when i was fifteen and im finally starting on it. Its also got cragar SS wheels that are in need of cleaning. Needs paint, but i love it. I cant wait to just have it driving. It will need love inside and out but it will be sweet. Ive got some pics to post of it later.
