I have a 1975 Mustang II that i'm using the engine for my 88 ranger, i was told it had a double hump oil pan, but it doesn't, it has the front sump.

So my question is, what years and make of cars/trucks that have the 302 double hump pan will work on my 75 302???

also what all years of 302's intakes will work on mine, I want to get a 4 barrel intake, and I don't know what all years will work.

thank you

Robert

For the most part a 302 block is a 302 block. There are a few variations like 4 bolt mains, oil passages, oil dipstick in block or pan. Pretty much any 302 oil pan will bolt onto any 302 block just make sure that it has provisions for oil dipstick if your engine has it in the pan. You will also need the pickup tube for the double sump pan. As long as you are using factory heads I think that you can use any 302 intake on your engine, I think the same applies to aftermarket heads but I'm not sure.

I'm running an edelbrock 289 performer intake on mine and its perfect for the engine. Got mine for half price off craiglist for $75 and it was barely used too.

So is that what the carb I sold you is going on? If you know how to tune it and make it work right, you got a hell of a steal from me.

As for oil pans, tech library will say it all, but the pans off the crown vics may do ya. But you need to know your dip stick situation.

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
if it is an actual m2 engine.....i would sell it on a m2 forum. real m2 pans are hard to get.

get a 90's truck engine and vic/bird/stang acc and pan.

If I get a intake, that carb will get put on it, and there is a guy here that is a Holley Nut, he went crazy when I showed him the carb, he's going to set it for me.

believe it or not, it's the factory 1975 engine, and the numbers match the body numbers, I haven't taken the heads off, but I would just about bet that it hasn't been bored yet.

also the dip stick comes off the front of the engine, out of the timing cover, I'll try to get a picture later.

Sounds like you got a hell of a deal on a carb then.

Don't know how much power that engine is going to put out being it was from the era that muscle cars were dogged down due to emissions but a different set of heads could help that out.

Oil pans, one year of many that you'll want is the '79' Muatang one that has the dip stick in the pan, many auto stores have them and the pick-up and dipstick. Any head from the 221 on will bolt on as will any of the intakes between the years. That front cover will make things tight up front but easy to just plug the hole for the dip stick. The 302's from '73-76' are the worst, besides the 255, for building up. Stock was only 140 hp. Compression was 8:1. Deck height was raised .023 and pistons had a deeper dish in them. Heads had the same valves from '68-80' and '75' had 58.2 cc. The crank timing was also retarted a couple of degrees. Cam was a really low .368/.380 lift at valves. All done back then for smog emissions.

Later down the road, I might build it, I was told if I got 351C heads, 4V intake, and pistons, I would end up with a 302 Boss, right now I really don't care, the 130/140 hp that the stock makes is fine, any more and I will have to find a better trans, my trans only has the 11 bolt pan, I'm not too sure, but I think that is a C3, might be a C4, later I'm going to find a AOD, and put that in.

I do know that before I took this thing apart, it ran like a dog with turpentine on it's tail.
the rear end is a 3.00, and it still got down the road, I was using my GPS on I-81 and I got up to 126 mph, a bit scary on 13" tires.

I'm going to have to wait till this week end and then go to Pull-A-Part, and look for a pan and pickup tube, then I'll have to wait till I can afford to get a full gasket kit, and a new oil pump, and water pump, that will be next month, unless I can pick up a few odd ball jobs.

I would try to get a iron water pump or rebuild what you have since the aluminum china ones suck (think you already know what mine has done already).

Also on the oil pump, go high volume, can't hurt anything. Me betting stubborn but also was running out of time and money for my swap, I just used what the engine already had on it. Keep your eyes open for deals on here and else where.

Hope to see a build thread started soon.

I did start a build thread, but it died, I was first going to install a 4.0 in my ranger, then changed my mind, so now the Ranger is sitting here with all the front sheet metal off, and the 302 is in the garage getting cleaned up, the mustang is being parted out, hopefully I can sell parts of it to get the oil pump, that is the most expensive item on the "to get" list, then a gasket kit, I don't want the this marking it's place when I'm in town.

I'll start a new thread when I get everything together and have something to show.

Talk about a budget build. The most expensive thing on my swap was the trans/transfercase at 275, which still wasn't bad.

But all in a nut shell, total cost was a grand.

well its got the right manifolds already:D

dont think it would keep up with a tight 2.9 with a manual though if it has an auto.

at least you know that 300 hp is easily bolted on with a 302 as money allows though.

with a 2 bbl it might do pretty good on fuel.

if we do some more work in sc maybe we can meet up, i usually go across 40.
