I've always wanted to build a street rod, start with frame rails on jack stands and end up with a car, but I knew I didn't want to keep a street rod clean so I built an orange Ranger.

Believe it or not my buddy drove this one in a few really bad snow storms from PA to Detroit and ran the hell out of it daily for awhile, its finally showing its age in some areas but it was built I think in 08.

My credo
If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
That explains the snow tires on the back. It's still cool.

Got started on the perimeter frame today. Body fits on it real nice. Need to do the front crossmember and the rear kick up still but it shouldn't be long before its on its own wheels

Curious why you didn't get the recessed firewall? Looks like you'll need to modify the one on the car, especially if you want to maintain the stock hood length.

I used a "Bitchin" firewall on my Henry Ford original steel Model A.

Brookville body, I got a hell of a deal on it. Posies in Hummelstown Pa had a guy come in and say he wanted them to build one for him so they ordered it. Got ready for shipping and he ghosted them. I wanted a 28/29 at first. He said he had this 30/31 still in Ohio and the rest of the story so I jumped on it. 🤷🏿‍♂️

I making a hood from scratch also, using a 32 grill and if I can find one a Duvall windshield..... hardest part to find btw....

I'm sure I could do that but I like the fire wall the way it is rn

I'll have to trim it anyway to make a TKO600 fit

Also what trans are running?
I have a problem now I was gonna go TKO 600 with the front shift so the shifter comes up more near the dash, but Tremec discontinued it. And I dont think a T5 with a s10 tail housing will come up where I want it. Yet alone hold up to a to a 408 5.8 base stroker for long even with Astro gears....

Sounds like a fun project.

I liked the look of the stock firewall too, but with a V-8... well... as soon as I sat the 350 SBC in the frame rails I could see a new firewall would be the best approach. It was an easy install. Drill out the stock spot welds, clean up the cowl belt, slide in the new one, and mig weld it in place.

Back in the day... guys welded a steel wheelbarrow tub in, to recess the firewall. Good stuff.

Our Model A has a '72 turbo 350. The body didn't have any floor in it when I bought it. So I waited until I had the frame and drivetrain fab'd up and then built the floor pan to clear everything.

Side note: I used to live about 4 miles from Brookville Roadster. But just a handful of parts on our A-bone are from them (chopped grill shell and insert with bullnose. Always fun visiting their shop. Literally like walking into a time capsule.

So If I went with the TKO 600 with the front shift thats where it would have come up.

66346

T5 with s10 tail would be about 5 inches back from that

66348

But the new TKX would be an inch further back with the mid shift on... no front shift..

66349

Ruff guesstimate anyway....

Looking good.
  • What type of steering box are you planning to use? Vega?
  • And are you going to use a front panhard bar?
  • Have you thought about drilling the front I-beam?
