Hopefully a year from now I will have completed my 1986 Crown Victoria project. I need to get the car painted and build another engine for it. When I yank the stock 5.0L engine out, I may consider putting it into my 1992 Ranger. However I came up with a couple of questions about it though. 1) The 86 CV has speed density and the 92 Ranger has mass air. I assume that I have to convert the SD 86 5.0L to a mass air HO engine because the timing is different right? 2) Will the 5-speed behind the 3.0L hold up to the torque of the 5.0L engine? I drive like an old man in that truck; will this let the tranny live behind the V8?

You will have to change everything. Is the Ranger 2wd or 4x4? There is no adapter on the market to use the 3.0L transmission behind a V8 nor would it be a good idea; you will kill it. To do this you can go a few ways. Slap a carb and intake on the 302 and run it that way. Take all the SD electronics from the Vic and transplant them into the Ranger. Or find a mass air 302 and take the electronics from it and convert to mass air. The Ranger ECM won't run the V8. There are a lot of options, here are the most popular and cheapest. Use a C4, C6 or AOD and adapter to use the stock t-case if you have 4x4. Or use a full size t-case and make or have driveshafts made. If you desire a 5 speed the M5OD-R2 from the F-150 is your best choice. If you can manage to find one from a 97 and later F-150 with the 6cyl it will have a better shifter position. There are a lot of ways to go with a swap.

Transmission wise you could also get a 4STB (its the AOD with a manual valve body), that is, if you want to go with a manual.

Youd have to get a completely different electronics package though....

Thanks for the tips guys. The Ranger is 2WD and I have to retain the EFI for emissions in NJ. I suspected that there would be a lot more to this swap than getting a swap kit from Summit or JEGS. I might get a T5 tranny to put behind the 5.0L. I am in unfamiliar territory with EFI. I have been working on my mom's 86 CV so I am a little bit familiar with it. I will be converting to mass air when I build the Lightning engine for it. I guess that I will keep the SD computer and try to get it to run in the Ranger. I am just throwing this idea out there because the 5.0L runs good and it would be waste to let it rot in the garage.

You won't have a problem swapping in the SD setup in the Ranger. The only problem is the SD system doesn't like an big engine mods. So if you are planning a stroker of anything big that is really the only problem you will see.

It'll remain stock in the Ranger (if I choose to do the conversion) except for the exhaust. The SD computer took exhaust mods without any problems so that isn't a concern. I expect the MPGs would be a little better with a T5 than with the AOD that is in the Crown Vic. I figured that the stock 5.0L has more torque (even though it is low on hp) than the stock 3.0L V6 so I can haul heavier things. Plus the MPG of the stock SD 5.0L is really good and is close to the V6. I'll see how everything goes with the CV project.
