3.0 transmission

I have a '99 ranger with the 3.0. Looking for an automatic transmission and what years will work with it. It is 4wd.

1999 3.0l Ranger used a 4R44E "MODEL" automatic, that's not what fits that's just the model
Like "Ranger" is a model, Ranger isn't specific, it can be a 2WD or 4x4, have a V6 or 4cyl engine, regular cab or extended cab, ect............4R44E is just the model number
3.0l, 2.5l, 2.3l 2WD and 4WD Rangers all used 4R44E "model"

You need a 3.0l "model" from a 1995 to 2000 3.0l Ranger or Mazda B3000, and as said above in 2WD or 4WD, that must match as well, no conversion is possible

Because you have a 1998-2000 Ranger you also have another "model" option, the 2001-2008 5R44E from a 3.0l Ranger or Mazda B3000

The 5R was the same transmission internally but had 2 added sensors on the outside, your 1999 doesn't need them so they don't need to be hooked up, so the 5R44E from a 3.0l is plug and play in your 1999 3.0l Ranger
And no, you don't get the 5th gear because there is no 5th gear, lol, it was just a software update in the 2001 and up computers

So you may find a lower mile 2001-2008 5R44E and certainly not as old as the 1995-2000 4Rs

Used automatics are a roll of the dice................

Always get a new torque converter when swapping or rebuilding any automatic
Also clean out the transmission cooler and lines
If old trans had metal filings they will be in the converter and cooler, and they will be transferred to replacement

As you can see in the list, there are no later model trannies. They may fit, but car-part usually only lists parts that plug and play. The later trannies may require a wiring plug change or some other simple modification to fit, but car-part doesn't include something like that in their list. They are a good interchange source to see what is a direct fit and what is not, though like everyone else they can have mistakes.

Yes, you would have to search for 2001 3.0l Ranger "2WD"?? and 5R44E, and would get the 2001-2008 autos available
2008 was last year for 3.0l engines

No difference in wiring for Ranger automatic transmissions, 1995 to 2011, the 5Rs from 2001 and up just has 2 extra sensors on the outside, using separate wiring added in 2001
