Is there any particular reason why you don't want EFI? For a daily driver, can't beat it
I don’t want to daily drive it. I want to take it out for a rip on the weekends after the long week at the dealership. Also for the people talking about the trans, I’m looking for a manual. And I feel like even though f150 trans might be a little weaker or higher mileage, I know they will bolt in. Will the stang trans also bolt in? I’m also trying to keep this on the “simple” side. I want it to look like a stock ranger, and then you fire it up and blow away the dude in opposite lane at the light. F150 shifter will be in the same spot so I can keep my cup holders too I believe. Might get the hurst shirt shifter in it too

I have a foxbody t5 in mine.. the only thing you have to.do is cut a new whole in the floor.. very easy. Now, the hydraulic clutch situation..thats a little bit of a chore. I stll.havent got mine right. It works for sure..just not like I want

With the f150 trans, would I have issues with the hydronic clutch too or no? Also does the parts exploder have to be 2wd or could I get an 4wd 4 door

Ranger Master clutch cylinder will work with the F-150 slave, so not an issue

If you are going to use the F-150 2WD transmission then explorer can be either 2WD or 4x4, doesn't matter as far as engine and computer, just transmission

Ok so here’s the list I’ve made as far as major parts I’ll need.

a parts explorer from 98-01 for the motor and rear end.
F150 trans from a 4.2l
An extra ranger drive shaft in case I break the one I have. Will I need a kit to make the explorer rear end fit

Ranger rear end is fine to use with V8, 7.5" or 8.8"
No the explorer rear end won't bolt into Ranger as is, unless you want it 4" lower in the rear, need to cut off and move then re-weld mounts on explorer axle to fit Ranger

1996-2003 F-150 2WD 4.2l(V6) manual transmission

Update: I just got an 83 302 from an f150 if was a deal I couldn’t refuse and it has a 351 intake and comes with the carb. Do I still need to look for a 90s f150 trans / 90s mustang trans?

It can't have a 351 intake.

If it's truly a 351w lower intake and it fits, then it's a 351 under it.

If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?

302 intakes are about 9" wide and 351s are about 11". If that intake bolted on it's a 351.

You can use any transmission that will bolt to a Ford small block V8, that has never been an issue
The issue is with Manual transmission's shifter placement on the transmission
Earlier Trucks had the shifter farther forward, under the Ranger dash
Cars/Mustangs had the shifter farther back, between seats in a Ranger

For Manual trans
The 1996-2003 M5OD-R2 from a 4.2l V6(same pattern as small block V8) has shifter in the same place as Ranger's M5OD-R1

If using a Carb and no computer an AOD automatic is best, not AOD-E, AOD
